Willford Executrix Radar Used to Track Down Smog Chemicals Los Angeles (U.R) Radar is now being used as a detective to track down some ol the chem icals responsible for eye-smarting smog. Dr. W. D. Hershberger, profes sor of engineering, has found that the pattern of certain micro waves is changed with the pres ence of gasses thought to be as sociated with smog. Dr. Hershberger plans to use radar in both laboratory experi ments and in testing the smog as it forms over Los Angeles. Microwaves will be beamed across the area from stations to special receiving instruments on top of the UCLA engineering building. Sheriff Startled Over Troubled Woman's Call Stillwater, Minn. (U.R) Sheriff Reuben Grandquist'a phone rang at 4 a.m. and a wom an's voice announced "I can't take it any more; this is the end." Granquist stalled the woman along with small talk, trying to collect his wits and find a way to avert a suicide. Finally, he asked her what was troubling her. "There are two skunks in my basement and I wish you would get them out," the woman said. A game warden disposed of the skunks. Thursday, September 8, I95S MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN Research Speeded On The Fantastic 'Ultimate Weapon' Washington (U.R) Research on a fantastic, ocean-spanning "ultimate weapon" may be hast ened by the decision to launch an earth satellite for scientific study. The weapon, known as the In tercontinental Ballistics Missile, would work on the same basic principle as the satellite. The United States is known to V be developing several types of the IBM, which, when perfect ed, could span oceans in a mat ter of minutes and come crashing down on its target from outer space at speeds in excess of 10, 000 miles an hour. Russia is working on it too. Research experts think de fense is theoretically possible, but no known defense exists now. Armed with an, automic or hydrogen warhead, it would wreak untold devastation in the target area. Two Type The missile would be aimed something like an artillery shell. Scientists believe the IBM can be perfected to hit within a 20 mile circle after a flight of sev eral thousand miles. With an H bomb warhead, this would be sufficient accuracy. Two types of missiles may be in early test stages at the Air Force's missile test center at Co coa, Fla. One is the true ballis tics type that streaks out of the. atmosphere like an artillery shell at more than 12,500 feet per second. The other is the jet-propelled type of missile that flies more slowly but can be more accurate ly controlled all the way to the target. This kind will be able to steer itself by the stars. Diplomatic and technical ar rangements now are in progress to set up a 5,000-mile missile test range reaching from Banana River, Fla., across the South At lantic to British-held Ascension Island. The missiles will be fired the length of the course but will be armed with test instruments instead of warheads. Another problem which has not yet been solved is that of de fense. There can be little or no advance warning of an attack. And even if interceptor planes did get up in time, they could not cope with IBM. Russia is believed on the track of such a weappn. Lt. Gen. Don ald L. Putt, Air Force research chief, told Congress last March that Russia has the ability to develop a "surprise" weapon that could tip the military scales High School Students Building Computer - Buffalo, N.Y. (U.R) Stu dents at Hutchinson-C e n t r a 1 Technical High School are build ing an electro-magnetic comput er, more commonly known as an "electronic braini' Aaron L. Buchman, a mathe matics teacher at Hutchinson, is directing the construction of the "brain." He has studied the de velopment of computers since the first commercial machine was produced 12 years ago. Funds were appropriated by the board of education for the "brain," which is expected to cost about $1,000. "There will be a big demand for people trained in this field," said Buchman. "The students would require a great deal of further education before they are trained opera tors," he added, "but our project will give them a basic grounding in electronic computing."
