Proof That Apes Do Kidnap Women

Middle Congo came Major Jac
quest Daguet with what he
claims is proof of an old legend
that the great apes sometimes
do kidnap native women.
This tale, in one form or an
other has been a standard fable
for sensational magazines and
newspapers. Everyone is fa
miliar with the imaginative ill
lustrations, the mighty beast bar
ing his dripping fangs at pur
suers while the shapely body
of his captive is draped over I
one of hi3 shoulders.
I always thought it was a bit
of early science fiction myself
but a few words with Major
Daguet almost changed my mind.
For Major Daguet is not the
man to fool or to be fooled. He
is a veteran jungle dweller, a
forestry engineer who served
with the Free French com
mandos during the war. And
he was deadly serious as I cross
examined him to satisfy myself

The Major's Story
Here is his story as he told it

Oregon State Fair
Two Medford 4-H'ers, Susan
Wright and Allen Barnes, took
championships in judging at the
state fair'which opened in Salem
this week.
Miss Wright won a purple
champion's ribbon and a scholar
ship to the 1956 4-H summer
school with her angel food cake
in the third year cookery class.
She won from over 57 contest
ants. A miniature red covered
prairie schooner wired as a lamp
brought highest honors to
Barnes in the woodworking divi
sion. The 13-year-old also won a
summer school scholarship.

and Susan Wright, Jacksonville, first,
angel food cakes; Darel Daniels. Cen
tral Point, blue ribbon, woodworking;
Nyla Murray. Medford. and Alice

Kathy Zimmerlee, Ashland, white
ribbon, ice box cookies.

competition among the
apes for females. When a male
catches a female he finds a tall
tree which is not close to any
other trees and forces her by
beating her to climb up to the
treetop.
"Now one day several native
women from a settlement near
Holle were washing laundry in
the river when a young male
chimpanzee about eight years
old suddenly sprang at them.
This woman' Iam telling you
about was not alert and . the
chimpanzee grabbed her by the
arms.
"He dragged her along the
ground, beating her frequently,
until they came to a tree and
he tried to force her to climb it.
She couldn't climb it so he found
another easier tree and helped
her up. For several days he kept
her there, feeding her bananas
and a red fruit like a red onion
which is called in French "faux
camphrier.'
"She was becoming badly hurt
by the beatings and she decided
to risk her life by trying to
escape. When the ape went into
the forest one day, she got down
from the tree and stumbled to
ward her village where she was
found by her friends.
"She is about 30 and -there
are certain details of her story
which she told to missionaries
and the head men as well as my:
self which it would be impos
sible for a native to invent.
Her body was bruised from head
to foot.
"In my opinion, and I've ques
tioned her closely, there is .no
doubt about her story."
