Wynn himself has beaten the Orioles three times this year, shutting them out twice and allowing only two runs in the third game. The 35-year-old right-hander started the campaign with 184 victories and has compiled a 15- 9 record although sidelined for the first three weeks with pneu monia. Teammate Bob Feller is the only active player with 300 victories 266 compared to 158 losses. Nine Game Swing The game starts a nine-game eastern swing for the Indians, who have won six of their last eight games. In all they have 17 games to play. The Yankees and White Sox have 18 each and the Red Sox have 19. Next to the Indians, the Red Sox have been the hottest of the contenders this month with five victories in seven games. Al though three games behind the Indians, they have the advant age of playing 16 of their 19 games at home. In addition, they have seven big games left with the Yankees. Frank Sullivan will be on the mound for the Red Sox against the Detroit Tigers today. Ford Choice Whitey Ford, also gunning for his 17th triumph, was Manager Casey Stengel's choice to start on the mound against the Kan sas City Athletics while Jack Harshman will start for the White Sox against the Washing ton Senators tonight. Both the Yankees and White Sox were hoping Tuesday's re spite from the almost unbear able pressure of the mad chase would help snap them out of mild slumps. Over in the National League, the inevitable Brooklyn Dodger victory is only a matter of hours away. The Brooklyn sluggers can clinch at least a tie for the flag by beating the Milwaukee Braves tonight and then their next victory would end it all. Turner Foe Of Basilio Syracuse. N.Y. U.R) Wel terweight champion Carmen Ba silio will try to beat middle weight contender Gil Turner to night and further his campaign for a shot at the 160-pound crown. Their nationally televised and broadcast 10-rounder in War Memorial auditorium will be Basilio's second non-title fight since he won the 147-pound championshiD from Tony De- co on June 10. Raw-boned Carmen of nearby Chittenango, N.Y., started his middleweight drive with a de cision over unranked Italo Scor- tichini on Aug. 10. And he is fa vored at 9-5 to win tonight over Turner of Philadelphia, 10th- ranking contender. Carmen, 28, and Gil, 24, are aggressive fighters. And each is a seasoned boxer-puncher. Three victories this year left Carmen unbeaten in his last 13 bouts although he was held to twp draws. His record is 46-11-7. Meanwhile Turner's record is 48-8-1. WORLD SERIES TO OPEN SEPTEMBER 28 OR 29 New York UR) Here are the 1955 World Series plans, as drawn up by Baseball Com missioner Ford Frick and representatives of the seven teams which still have a math ematical chance of winning a pennant: Ralph Kiner To Retire at Season End By MILTON RICHMAN New York U.R) Ralph Kiner of the Cleveland Indians, the leading home run hitter of the post-war era, said today he is re tiring from baseball at the end of this season because of "physi cal reasons." The 32-year-old outfielder, who has hit a total of 367 homers during 10 active seasons in the majors, said he was "tempted to quit" several times during the middle of the current campaign because of a back condition. "The only thing that kept me from quitting during the season was the possibility that I might be able to help the Indians win the pennant," he said. Retirement Definite "But I've definitely made up my mind that ' this is my last season," he added. "I'm no longer in physical condition to play v regularly and there's no sense in prolonging the agony." Kiner said he, had no idea what he is going to do but he emphasized that he was not in terested in any possible mana gerial offers. "I may go into business some where in Southern California," he said. Kiner, a powerful right handed hitter who took great pride in his accomplishments, ranks sixth among baseball's all time home run hitters. His total of 367 homers is topped only by Babe Ruth, 714, Jimmy Foxx, 534, Mel Ott, 511, Lou Gehrig, 493, and Ted Williams, 385. Reduced to part-time status with the Indians this year, Ki ner, who is receiving an esti mated $50,000 salary, has hit 16 home runs so far and is batting .242 with 51 runs batted in. HU.R) Heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano was warned by trainer Charlie Goldman Tuesday that loss of his temper in his Sept. 20 title defense against Archie Moore might be followed by loss of the title. "All Mioore wants is for you to lose your temper, Rocky," said Goldman. "Look what he did to Bobo Olson when he got him to fall for a sucker punch. It would happen to you, too." JOINS ATHLETICS Kansas City, Mo. 0J.R) Pitcher Gus Keriazakos, who had a major-league trial last year with the Washington Senators when he compiled a 2-3 won-lost record, was to join the Kansas City Athletics today in New York. Keriazakos, 24, was ac quired by the A's earlier this year in a minor league trade. While most of the top players were on hand, some 20 Black Tornado grid candidates ' were fighting fires. Head Coach Fred Spiegelberg reported a top turn out of 33 boys yesterday. Despite the shortage of person nel, the Tornado did have a good scrimmage yesterday as it groom ed for the game here Saturday Grid Coach Reports to Rotary Club The Medford Black Tornado may have to suit-up some of the large coaching staff for the game Saturday night with Cleveland high of Portland if the present forest fire situation does not im prove. Although not too serious on this prediction, Fred Spiegel berg. Medford head football coach told the Medford Rotary club in a luncheon address Tues day that some of the Medford squad were on the fire fighting lines in this area and improve ment "of forest fire conditions should be hoped for by local gridiron fans. Speaking at Hotel Jackson, Coach Spiegelberg introduced Paul Evensen, line coach, and Bob Newland, backfield coach, and told Rotarians that the Tor nado should give a good account of itself if the size of the coach ing staff is considered a factor. Along with Spiegelberg, Evensen and Newland are Frank Roe- landt and the combined coach ing staffs of Medf ord's two junior high schools rounding the material into shape on the Med ford stadium field. Grants Pass should be the top choice for the 1955 state high school title if size and exper ience are considered, Spiegel berg said. The Cavemen's line averages conservatively 217 pounds. There is also every indi cation that Ashland will be strong contender this year, and Crater high, aiming for A-l league recognition in 1956, has good prospects. The Black Tornado, with 18 lettermen back, have lots of ma terial at end, light but fast mid line candidates, and a fair size, scrappy backfield lineup strengthened by the return of Dave Bosworth. Some good sophomore ma'terial from junior high school will also be utilized this season, Coach Spiegelberg tola Rotarians. High school principal Lester Harris was program chairman and introduced the speaker. Dodgers Eye Flag Toast Milwaukie (U.R) The big question when the Brooklyn Dodgers arrived to start their final western swing today was not how's Roy Campanella's hand, or Carl Erskine's elbow, but "who's got the bottle open er?" For, it's only a matter of time until the Dodgers will clinch the National league pennant. They can clinch a tie by beating the Braves tonight and then will need only one more victory to assure them of a World Series check. Spiegelberg reported that the scrimmage lasted for about an hour and that each youth on hand got in about a half-hour of playing time. Halfback John Bellack and End Dick Copple did the scor ing as one line-up clipped the other 9 to 0. Bellack was shaken loose off tackle with good blocking on the first scrimmage play and travelled about 50 yards for a touchdown. The hassle was fairly even after that and Copple, showing a new Tor nado threat, topped off the point producing with a field goal. He kicked from about the 15-yard line and at an angle. Hoist Does Well Monte Hoist came through with a fine job of backing up the line. He was in on most tackles. Dick McLaughlin also showed well in linebacking. Spiegelberg reported that stomach flu had sidelined Mel Morgan, the regular "outside" or right tackle in the Tornado unbalanced line. Larry Slessler, 192-pound junior, moved into the spot and was working good. Jim iunston, 181, junior,, is pressing for the slot. The head coach reported that Neil Plumley, 200-pound letter- man and top prospective tackle, is still on the sick list and may not be with the team for some time. Injurywise, Lloyd Cearley, fullback and left half, is suffer ing from an arm bruise. Several other squad members also are nursing bruises although they do not appear serious. Total number of lettermen now out rose to 19 when Mike Stearns, junior end, reported. Saturday's game is at 8 p.m. Spiegelberg said that the ad ditional lights planned at the field probably will not be in stalled for the Cleveland mix. Equipment reportedly has not arrived for the power company. TV GAME SET Chicago (U.R) The first of five Big Ten football games to be televised on a regional bas is in the Midwest this fall by the Columbia Broadcasting Sys tern will be the Michigan State Indiana game on Sept. 24. The other games to be announced, will be on Oct. 8, Oct. 22, Nov. 5, and Nov. 12.
