MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE New York Team Exponents Of 'Break-It Yourself Props for Programs on TV New York (U.PJ When your favorite TV comedian is conk 4 with a dinner platter or your favorite actor buried in a mine cavein, relax. Guys like Eddie Greenstein end Fred McAliece are working behind the scenes to make sure that stars emerge ass unbattered as TV wrestlers. Greenstein and McAliece, two hitherto unsung heroes of the networks, are prime exponents of a hammer-and-saw school known as "break-it-yourself." They build . such knick-knacks for NBC-TV as vases that shat ter, Qthairs that splatter and pi anos that splinter. When Imogene Coca sat on a sofa on a TV show not so long ago and nonchalanty picked at the plugs and wadding until the arm fell off, that was one of the masterworks of Green stein. Balsa Wood Facade And when Sid Caesar punched his fist through a wall on anoth er show and 500 bricks came tumbling down around him, that balsa wood facade came from the workshop of McAliece. The principal concern of Greenstein, McAliece and other master un-builders at -the net works is the safety of the stars. That, and the assurance that the bric-a-brac they turn out will fall apart on cue. Reflectorized Street Signs Aid Searchers Chicago (U.R) Motorists will have less trouble in the fu ture while searching for un familiar streets, according to a report of the National Safety Council. Reflectorized street signs are used in numerous cities so motor ists can find a particular street easier. . St. Paul, Minn, converted to the glowing street signs as an added safety factor and for con venience. St. Paul Commissioner Frank Marzitelli said not only do the signs .create added safety by eliminating traffic tie-ups and possible resultant accidents, be cause motorists must stop to see the old style sign, but the new signs also save time for firemen and police. Phoenix, Ariz., and Kansas City, Mo., also have reflectorized street signs. Kansas City officials said car headlights pick up the signs more than a block away, giving the driver plenty of time to make his decision and increas ing to 'ai'fic safety. White Lake, Mich. Long-Lastiny Turtle Carvings Said Doubtful Los Angeles (U.R) Writing on ice is just as satisfactory as carving your initials on a live turtoise shelL Dr. Loye Holmes Miller, zoo logy professor on the University of California campus here, takes with a grain of salt those tales of tortoises that have survived for a century or so as evidenced by such initials and dates carved on their shells. Miller has been observing des ert tortoises for years and has found that such carvings disap pear within a year because of the regeneration characteristics of the reptile. University's Popular Course Is In Angling Pittsburgh U.R) -One of the University of Pittsburgh's most popular courses is a class for anglers taught by Prof. Edwin L". Peterson, a professor of Eng lish composition. Peterson, an expert in fly tying as W;ll as literature, syn tax and punctuation, lectures and demonstrates the art of fashion ing wet flies, dry flies, and other devices used in trout fishing. The course, offered free to the public for the past eight years by the university, 'meets from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. every day for a week in a classroom at Pitt's Cathedral of Learning during summer school.
