G 0 O Land Reappraisal Program Will Boost State Bond Rating Salem (U.R) An increase in the assessed valuation of land under the state-wide reappraisal program together with the retire ment of certain state bonds will strengthen, the ratings of State of Oregoni bonds, according to State Treasurer Sig Unander. Unander said $250,000 in state highway bonds and payment of $487,187.50 interest on outstand ing highway bonds was being made today. This will reduce the state highway bond debit from $72,000,000 to $63,352,500. The state will retire an addi tional $887,500 in bonds and pay $102,703 in interest Oct. 1. On the same date, Unander said, the state will also retire $2,500,000 veterans' bonus bonds and $1 000,000 of veterans' loan bonds. Interest on the bonus bonds of $383,125 and interest on the vet erans' loan bonds of $468,442 will also be paid Oct. 1. Retirement of state bonds in September and October, Unan der said, will reduce the state bonded indebtedness from $177,' 757,100 to $171,269,600. Payments on principal and ii terest on the highway bonds is paid out of motor vehicle rev enues and fines. Payments on the veterans' loan bonds are made from receipts from veterans who have bought homes and farms on such loans. The only issue paid out of tax funds is for vet erans bonus bonds, an issue au thorized by a vote of the people. Smith. Teachers for the school this year will be Smith, grades 7 and 8; Mrs. Reva Bayliss, grades 5 and 6; Susan Ambrose, grades 3 and 4, and Mildred Mack, grades 1 and 2. Several changes have been made during the vacation period' in, the school equipment, build in g,-and grounds. New equipment includes a pub lic address system, an apaque projector, and a recording ma chine. Asphalt tile has been laid in three of the school rooms, and two beds and a scale have been placed in the health room. The school gymnasium has been pointed, and a new drink ing fountain has been installed. The outside play area has been increased by removal of several trees. Washington U.P.) Theh the cAPvy, (WHO MEANS WELL WHATO WHAT Experiment Station Purpose Outlined For EUwanis Club Functions of agricultural ex periment stations to improve present economy and to insure continued and increasing stand ards of living were outlined for Medfoftd Kiwanians Wednesday by Harold White. White, superintendent of the Southern Oregon Branch Experi ment station, discussed the work and purposes of the station. He spoke at a luncheon meeting at Rogue Valley Country club. The research program of the station is of concern to every man, woman and child, White said. He stressed that stations are set up to affect the"economy of all the population, not just the farm people. Taxpayers finance the work, he said, and business and professional men have a right to know what is going on with their money. Telling what the station at Talent has accomplished, White reported on the development of Talent alfalfa. He said that an $8,000 expenditure had im proved the industry to the ex tent of bringing in $465,000 per year to the valley from seed and hay production. White pointed to 13,000 acres in Jackson and Josephine coun ties planted in alfalfa. Planting talent seed means 13,000 tons more hay per year production, White reported, quoting a price of $20 per ton. He said that the seed produc tion business was going good un til government surpluses piled up and listed Jackson county in the forefront in the business in the state, mostly because of tal ent alfalfa. The superintendent said that a new alfalfa is being developed which is felt will be a better variety and a better feed for Jackson and Josephine counties. Three units of the southern Oregon branch, two at Talent and one just south of Medford, are blended into one operation, White explained. He mentioned that research here includes phases of nutrition; weed, disease and insect control and develop ment of new varieties. White spoke of 14 other branches and 300 staff members in the Oregon system of exten sion system. He listed the sta tion here as a laboratory of the station at Oregon State college and pointed out that personnel at Corvallis are at the beck and call of the branch here.' The speaker reported that the stations have no magic wands to wave in solving problems and expanding agriculture of the state. He said that experiment stations are behind' every bit of food and clothing produced. He pointed to the increasing popula tion and need to keep food sup plies abreast of the increase. He also mentioned the need for some type of new crops to help the economy of the valley. Portland Telephone Numbers Add Prefixes Effective Saturday Some 170,000 telephone num bers in Portland and surround ing areas will be changed at 11 p.m. Saturday. J. H. Creager, manager of the Medford office of Pacific Tele phone company, suggested that those who make frequent calls to Portland record the new num bers. IsWexed personal directo ries, called Blue books, are available at company business offices for persons who want to make up new lists, Creager said. Portland telephone officials point out the new numbers, of the seven-digit type, will also go into effect in Milwaukie-Oak Grove, Oswego and Burlington. They will have prefixes consist ing of two letters and a numeral. The last four numerals of the new telephone numbers will re main the same as the last four , numerals of the old six-digit sys-1 lem, it was puimea out. Creager said the new numbers will fit Portland into a new num bering system being established progressively throughout the United States and Canada. The plan will eventually make it pos sible for telephone users to dial calls directly to any telephone in the two countries.
