Lick Astronomer May Have Detected Birth Of Two New Stars; Unique Astronomy Event Mt Hamilton, Calif. (U.R) Dr. George H. Herbig, astron omr in the University of Calif ornia's Lick Observatory here, raised the possibility today that he had detected the birth of two new stars, a unique event in the history of astronomy if confirm ed. "Our understanding of what is taking place," Dr. Herbig said, "could hardly be more incom plete, but it may be that we have witnessed the opening phase of an. episode in stellar evolution." About 1800 Years Ago Astronomers use of the words "recent" and "birth," is, of course relative. The actual birth of the two new stars would have occurred about 1600 years ago. MAIN and BARTLETT STREETS the time it takes light to travel from the Orion nebula to the earth. The "new" stars, according to Dr. Herbig, are in the Orion nebula. They belong to a class ification known as "T Tauri" stars. They are so rare that few of them are in the solar sys tem's neighborhood. They were named T Tauri stars because the Queries Answered Regarding Credit Control For Loans Answers to many questions regarding credit controls on GI home loans were given today by S. T. Brannock, officer in charge of the Medford office of the Veterans Administration. The credit control order of July 30, 1955, requiring a two per cent down payment and limiting thje maturity of such loans to 25 years was not retro active, Brannock said. Exempted from credit con trols are those new and existing houses for which VA received requests for certificates of rea sonable value (appraisals) prior to July 30 and houses for which FHA commitments had been is sued, and for which VA received appraisal requests prior to Sep tember 30. Brannock explained that the aDDraisal request is the first step in the GI home loan pro cedure. Extensions of certificates of reasonable value on properties exempt from credit controls will not subiect the units to, down payment and maturity require ments, he said. However, veterans will be re quired to pay closing costs in cash on any exempt property for which a certificate of rea sonable value was extended. In multi-home projects, Bran nock said, substitution of houses on lots selected by veterans will not subject the property to credit controls ifboth the house and lot are covered by appraisal All Grades Start Sept. 9 At EP Eagle Point Eagle Point schools will open Friday, Sept. 9?with full day sessions for both grade and high school students. Busses will run on the same schedule used at the close of school last spring, according to G. D. Hall, superintendent of schools. Registration for new students a,t Eagle Point will be held Sept. 9, at which time fees. will be pay able. Fees include a $5 book rental fee, $1.50 student activities ticket, 50 cent deposit on a locker key, and $1.50 down pay ment 'on the school s annual if desired. An -additional $1.50 is charged when the annual is de livered. Course Fees Hale said if students wish to take metal shop there is a $4.50 fee, and for wood working shop the fee is $2. He pointed out that books can not be issued until fees are paid. First grade students must bring birth certificates and have had a physical examination. Hale said parents of first graders who did not have physicals dur ing the pre-school clinic should make arrangements with family physicians to have physical ex aminations prior to opening of school. Dr. Herbig suggested that his findings may provide important support for the idea of a contin Union in Dublin, Ireland. Two Types of Evidence Dr. Herbig based the possi bility that he had detected the birth of two stars on two types of evidence: requests received by the VA prior to July 30. Brannock said the new credit controls will not apply to GI loans made solely for the re placement of reconstruction of residential property that has been destroyed or substantially damaged by flood, fire or similar disasters. Neither do the new require ments apply to repair, alteration or improvement loans, Bran nock said. He added that VA could not grant exceptions where a" vet eran signed a contract prior to July 30, 1955, but for which request for appraisal was not received prior to that date. The two per cent down pay ment requirements must be met in every case by a payment of cash. An equity in land is not acceptable under VA regula tions, Brannock explained. Brannock emphasized VA can exclude homes not affected by FHA credit controls only if re quests for GI appraisals for those homes are received by VA cn or before Sept. 30, and VA can obtain satisfactory evidence of their exclusion from FHA credit controls.
