r i I s a (A 4 69 Med Treasure Check Value Carefully Before Selling a Coin If y$ have any coins you have decided to sell, be sure to consult more than one catalogue to determine their vaule before Belling. ' If you don't, you may very pofjibly discover sometime lat er that you have had a sub stantial loss. A case in point is what hap pened recently to Ned, an ac quaintance of mine. He had come across a 1917 half dollar which had been left to him some years before. So far M Ned could see, it looked like any other of hund reds of half dollars that had passed through his hands. None theless, he decided to check it by looking it up in a catalogue. There are four categories of the 1917 half dollar, even though they all have the same design: on the obverse side, above the date, the figure of Liberty walk ing to the left; on the other, the reverse side, an eagle with wings raised and standing on a crag. The differences lie in the mint marks. Some were minted COBBLER'S LIGHT MAKES The term folk art covers just about anything people have for their own use, and an interesting thing about it is that if some one found such an item useful once, it is almost a sure thing lomeone else will do so later. There may be a long wait, of course, but the probability is there Just the same. A case in point is a "cob bler's light" which Charles, a dealer friend of mine, bought 15 yVars ago for two or three dollars. It consisted of a wooden pole about five feet high and mount ed in a block which was sup ported on a wooden tripod. The pole was threaded for about three feet down from the top. Sitting on the threaded section was a crossbar some 20 inches long and on either end on which was a small candlestick. The piece was not old as such things go. Probably it was made about 1840. Charles was sure it was a cobbler's light because he had brought it from the grandson of a man who was a cobbler back in the days before the Civil war. The grandfather had made it himself as the FAME AND INFAMY It gave me something of a tart to see a copy of Mein Kampf standing there in its dust jacket among the other books. Curious, I took it down, open ed to the title page, saw, de spite my lack of German, that it had been printed in Munich in 1937. The price was $3. I promptly put it back. After all, the first edition of this horrible work by the great est murderer of all time had been brought out in June, 1925, shortly after Hitler got out of jail where he was doing a stretch fcr a crime he ought to have been executed for treason. And inasmuch as the number of cop ies subsequently run off exceed ed 10.000,000, ther was no point that I could see in bothering with that copy. But that was a mistake, and one that Henry, a friend of mine, did not commit. Some weeks later when he showed me his latest acquisi tion the identical book he pointed out the signature of Adolf Hitler on the fly, leaf. I smiled. 3 BEDROOM HOUSE Double Garage . . Ned's coin, . fortunately, was one of the 952,000 which were struck off at the San Francisco mint with the S on the obverse side where you can find it right below the motto "In God We Trust." He looked it up in two cat alogues which are widely ad vertised as giving "buying prices" the amounts dealers will pay. Because one catalogue didn't even list his coin and the other gave a buying price- of from $1 to $3.50, he didn't bother to sell. He was lucky that he didn't. The retail value 'of his coin, as shown in catalogues that give retail prices, is from $40 to $300. And because his half dollar was in excellent condition, it xwas easy for him to . find a dealer who was glad to offer him $100 for it. - . FINE LAMP AND PROFIT cheapest ' means by which he could .adjust light for his work He could raise or lower the candles merely by turning the crossbar. Well, Charles put a $15 price tag on the piece and set it in his shop window. After a year or so, he took it out and put it by his desk where he some times lit it in the late after noon as a means of giving the place a little atmosphere. When he noticed that his us ing it drew a little comment from some of the customers, he had the bright idea of raising the price, which he promptly did, to $65. Nothing happened for quite a while, several years in fact. But one day last year a customer showed interest. He would pay $40 for it, but not $65. Charles refused. "After all, I had got used to having it around," .he said, "and at that Point I really didn't care if I sold it or not." Whether his attitude was the cause, it was only a month or so later that the customer came back, paid the $65 and walked out with the cobbler's light. BOTH HAVE PRICE "Its genuine,' 'he said. "See here," and producing a docu ment with Hitler's signature on it, for which he had paid $15 at auction, he held it up for comparison. The signature was obviously a good one. Even though I am no graphologist, it couldn't well be otherwise for the simple rea son that anyone out to forge Hitler's signature wouldn't both er with putting it on anything other thaw some kind of a docu ment. Pointing out that $50 was the tcp price reported for Hitler's autograph in his country from 1945 through 1953, 1 asked what made him think so much of his find. ' Henry laughed. "Don't forget that Hitler was deeply loved as well as bitterly hated," he said. "And he still is. And part of the proof of it is that I've already been offer ed $20 for the book by one man and $100 for the document by another." .
