Gerlinger State Ex perimental Forest was dedicat ed here yesterday as a memorial to the "father of Oregon's forest program." The forest includes 1000 acres of young Douglas fir trees in western Polk county. It was dedicated in memory of the late George T. Gerlinger who was a member of the State Board "of Forestry for 30 years and who tookoleadership in development of many of Oregon's progressive forestry practices. A bad case of hurricane jitters plague this famous New England re sort a condition which Cape Cod's chamber of commerce pres ident would cheerfully strangle the Miami Weather Bureau for creating in the minds of tourists up this way. Capt. John R. Peterson, who owns two fine resort hotels here and once wrestled profession ally up and down the Pacific Coast, will take his chances with storms blowing in off the At lantic. But he is plenty burned up at the weather forecasters in Florida for giving everyone up here the hurricane jitters. Capt. Peterson is firmly con vinced the Miami Weather Bur eau is in cahoots with the com petitive Florida resorts to scare the wits out of vacationers in every resort on the eastern sea board north of Florida, especial ly Cape Cod, New England's fin est. Sitting in the lobby of one of the captain's hotels during the recent hurricane seige helps ex plain his attitude. The television set in the corner of the lobby has the attention of the gather ed guests. "Here is a bulletin from the Miami Weather Bureau," breaks in the eager announcer, as though he were about to an nounce the bombing of Pearl Harbor. A hush settles over the lobby, the guests lean forward. Miami, the announcer discloses, has discovered another hurri cane several hundred miles from the mainland moving at 7 miles an hour. A storm that far from the U.S., moving at that speed, is good for hourly bulletins for days plenty of time, Capt. Peterson has observed, to allow it to be come the most exciting conver sation piece on Cape Cod and start the big debate every tour ist has with himself "shall we batten down the hatches or start packing?" The hurricane theme is quickly picked up by the corps of colleg iate waitresses and bellhops that staff your hotel. They need little prompting to tell of their exper iences in last year's big blow bailing water out the front din ing room windows between serv ing guests their dinner, seeing water slosh in the front and right out the back doors of the nearby beachfront hotel, watch ing the porch furniture float away across a driveway of flood ed automobiles. That night the Boston news papers trucked into Cape Cod fairly scream for the vacationer's attention with . black, gloomy POV.ZR C." As another weather bul- j letin is read by the TV announc-1 er, a hotel manager dashes into j the midst of the guests in the ; lobby to declare, "Don't pay any ', attention to that, folks, it's just j propaganda put out by Calif ornia!" But the exodus has started. Capt. Peterson points out that only four hurricanes have ever hit Cape Cod down through the years. "We've always had line squalls from time to time," he said, "but nobody ever got particularly ex cited about them. Now the Mi ami Bureau gets everyone excit ed by calling everything a hur ricane. The people hear these reports and they start to scram out of here." There are a few stark remind ers of the power of a hurricane still standing on the Cape Cod beach. They are what is left of houses built dangerously close to the surf, where they had a commanding view of the sea but also where an angered sea had a clear shot at them. To the visitors who hears of hurricane warnings being post ed up and down the coast, the twisted wreckage of demolished residence here seem to carry more persuasion than Capt. Pet erson's confidence that the cape will be spared. And so, they scram out of here. In the end they learned that the captain was right, that Connie and Diane did spare the cape. But the net of it is the same to Capt. Peterson and oth er owners of resort establish ments here the Florida fore casters have put another big dent in the tourist season of one of New England's finest resorts.
