The New Taste Thrill Sold Exclusively at JACK'S DRIVE-UP 911 North Riverside Personal Health Service By WILLIAM BRADI, M.D. Readers should address inquiries to: Dr. William Brady 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. SUGAR AND THE TEETH Ever since the inspired huck ster invented the slogan "A Clean Tooth Never Decays" a fiction which sold a lot of brushes and glorified soap the dentists have bene advising people to brush their teeth morning and night, af ter each meal or at least every day. They imply that this silly rite will prevent decay of the teeth, although the most zealous toothbrushers in the world have the greatest amount of tooth de cay the American and English peoples. The people who h-a-v-e the least tooth decay never brush their teeth at all the people of Tristan da Cunha. The dentists cooperated With the commercial interests by de veloping and promoting the idea that particles of sugar clinging to the surfaces of the teeth, par ticularly in crevices between the teeth and at junction of gum and tooth, undergo fermentation by lactic bacilli, which are natur ally present in milk and other foods, generating lactic acid, and the acid eats or dissolves the enamel, the beginning of a cav ity. Upon this premise the dentists base their prohibition or restric tion of sugar and sweets in the diet, particularly the diet of the growing child. Again everybody's out of step but Brady. I have to admit it, except that I know and appre ciate good dentistry when I see it or get it. So I try to change the subject by asking what the average dentist knows about nu trition. Mind you, I believe excessive consumption of sugar, sweetened beverages, candy, ice cream, sweetened cookies, cakes, pud dings, pastries and sugared or syruped breakfast food is an im portant factor of dental decay, but not because sugar favors lac tic acid fermentation. It unques tionably does, but I say it is ab surd to- think the lactic acid so produced in the mouth can dis solve enamel from the teeth. I contend sugar does no direct harm, but the individual who consumes too much sugar just doesn't have normal appetite or normal hunger for more essential food, - particularly vegetables, fruits, salad greens, which are essential for good nutrition. If production of lactic acid from sugar were the objection able feature of excessive con sumption of sugar, the regular use of an alkaline solution to rinse the mouth after eating would prevent dental decay. It is all right to wash the mouth with plain water, water containing a pinch of soda, or (as I prefer) soapy water, when ever you wish. But be adult about it don't kid yourself that a "powerful" germicide or an tiseptic can do anything that one of these simple washes will not do. Perhaps the best prevention of tooth decay is (1) Consume not less than 1 Vif pints of milk daily r-d (2) Eat some unsugared fruit last thing every night. QUESTIONS & ANSWERS X-ray Evidence Have Ben Told the only way to test a person for tuberculosis is by X-ray. Is this correct? (E. A.) Answer Only by study of the pa tient and physical examination or re peated examinations can the physician determine whether the patient has tuberculosis. X-ray evidence confirms the physician's opinion, but is not by itself conclusive. poison OAK? Try a Bottle of ZEMACOL You must bo satisfied or your money cheerfully refunded.
