(International) Twist of Fate Landed Spelling Champion Place on Television's '$64,000 Question' New York (U.R) The chan nel swim: Gloria Lockerman, the 12-year-old spelling champ, landed on "The $64,000 Question" as the result of an offbeat twist of fate. She was auditioning for "The Quiz Kids," which the producers of "The $64,000 Question" plan to put on TV, and so impressed officials that they switched her to the big money show. Arthur Godfrey is scheduled iQ return to New York from his vacation on Sept. 12 only two days before his "Friends" show goes on. However, there will be qho trouble about rehearsals. It's Godfrey's normal policy to re hearse only on Tuesday after noons and on Wednesday, the day of the show. His Monday night "Talent Scouts" will be no problem either Godfrey usually goes on that show cold anyway. Lucy Entertains Britain ' The new British commercial TV network will introduce Brit- o ons to "I Love Lucy" and Lib- erace this fall. Plans also are afoot to star Bob Hope in a spec ial show from London's Pallad ium. CBS-TV officials are con sidering a new format for the "Morning" show it's losing money. Benson Asked To Aid Growers of Potatoes Denver U.R) Rep. J. Edgar Chenoweth (R.-ColoO said that he had. appealed to Agriculture secretary Ezra T. Benson for federal aTd to relieve "near fi nancial disaster" faced by thous ands of potato growers. Chenoweth called the potato price situation "very very des perate, and said he expected a decision on his requested gov ernment support of prices "late this week." I wired Benson early this week suggesting the government set up a buying program de signed to relieve the distress' of potato growers in Colorado and elsewhere acros sthe nation, said Chenoweth. He pointed out that a 50,000,000 bushel surplus was expected from this year's planting. The harvest will begin in a few weeks, he said, and "many growers don't have enough money to even begin the harvest" because banks and creditors were reluctant to ex tend financial assistance because of the low price level. Key mem bers of Congress today regarded a new reduction in government red-ink spending as fresh evi dence that everybody's income taxes are likely to be cut in the 1956 election year. The Eisenhower administra tion plans were outlined Thurs day by Secretary of Treasury George W. Humphrey and Bud get Director Rowland R Hughes. They made public a revised federal budget. It showed that booming prosperity has boosted tax revenues beyond expenta tions. It also showed the admin istration has now reduced from 52,400,000,000 to $1,700,000,000 its official forecast of red-ink spending in the current fiscal year, Hope To Balance Budget Moreover, Humphrey and Hughes said, "barring some un foreseen development, we think we can" eliminate the deficit entirely and "balance the bud get" before the fiscal year ends June 301956. Some Democratic tax experts believed the report was a tip-off that the administration, which blocked a Democratic tax-cut ting drive earlier this year, is now planning one of its own in advance of the 1956 elections They called it "politics." Speaker Sam Rayburn (D. Tex.) foresaw the possibility of a partisan fight over the issue of "who" gets tax relief. "When they (the Republicans) go to cutting taxes, we are go ing to look at whom they are proposing to cut them for," Ray burn said in a telephoned inter view from his Bonham, Tex., home. 1 Rayburn would not elaborate, but he has charged that the 1954 tax cut enacted by the Republi can Congress favored the weal thy and discriminated against the "little folks." Expect Tax Cuts Three Democrats on the House Ways and Means Commit tee agreed that Congress, with an eye to the election campaigns, will probably cut taxes next year, even if the administration doesn't recomrrfend it.-Reps,. No ble J. Gregory (Ky.) Frank W. Karsten (Mo.) and Herman P. Eberharter (Pa.) said it would be a Democratic tax cut de signed primarily to benefit low and middle income families. Like Humphrey, Sen. Eugene J. Millikin (Colo.), senior Re publican on the Senate Finance Committee, shied away from promising a tax cut next year. Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy (R Wis.) said he doubted the budg et can be balanced this year. He said Congress, in considering any tax reduction, would look at the general level of the economy first, and would give only sec ondary consideration to a bal anced budget. McCarthy said "any 3 per cent reduction in expenditures would probably have to come from the military budget, and that does'nt seem advisable at this time." Rep. Thomas Curtis (R-Mo.) predicts that if the next Con gress "will show more fiscal re sponsibility in handling appro priations ... we can balance the budget ... and . . . grant tax relief."
