Stengel gambled and won Thursday night when he tossed rookie pitcher Gary (Rip) Cole man against Early Wynn in the pressure-steeped opener of a three-game series with the In dians. Coleman, recalled recent ly from Denver, was making only his second start in the maj ors but he out-pitched Wynn and received credit for the Yankees' 5$ triumph. As a result the Yankees scored their 13th triumph in 16 games and dropped the second place Chicago White Sox Hi games off the pace. The third place Indians fell two games behind and the fourth-place Boston Red Sox now are five full gasoes out of first place. (Face Tells On Rivals Moreover, the Yankees' torrid pace of the last 18 days seems to be teliinz on all their rivals During the same period the White Sox are 12-5, the Indians 11-5 and the Red Sox 9-7. Th White Sox suffered their third loss in five games with seventh and eighth-place teams Thursday when they bowed to Bob Porterfield and the Wash ington Senators, 6-1. The Red Sox, meanwhile, had to rebound from a 6-1 loss to gain a split with the Detroit Tigers in a 6-4 V nightcap victory. j Coleman struck out four bat o Jers and yielded seven hits in 2 $ 2-3 innings before Bob Grim n (fcame in to snuff out Cleveland's eighth-inning threat and breeze through the ninth. Joe Collins, u who entered the game with a 0 .221 average, sent te Yankees on f) the road to victory when he " tagged Wynn for a two-run o homer In the second inning to o toQch off a four-run outburst. It was a bitter defeat for q Wynn because it was Collins who Jj on Aug. 2 tagged him for homers o in the first and 10th innings of ;) a game at Yankee Stadium to 0 give the Yankees a 2-1 triumph. O Wynn's record is 14-9 and he's i f.'ciled three straight games to C! win the 199th game of r: eer. Jackie Jensen became the first American Leaguer to drive in 100 runs this year when he hit a two-run homer and two run double to lead the Red Sox's 10-hit attack in their nightcap. The Tigers, however, had routed Willard Nixon in the opener to win handily behind the eight-hit pitching of Ned Garver, who posted his 11th triumph. Art Ceccarelli pitched four- hit ball behind a 13-hit attack as the Kansas City Athletics routed the Baltimore Orioles, 8-2, in the other A.L. game. Vic Power had three hits for Kansas City. (International) SrPdDLMTS Bobo Olson Faces Giambra Tonight in Non-Title Bout San Francisco (U.R) Pri - vate Joey Giambra climaxes a 15-day furlough tonight by meet ing world middleweight cham pion Carl Bobo Olson in a 10 round, non-title bout which may indicate whether the balding champion truly recovered from his June knockdown by Archie Moore. The fight will be tele vised from the Cow Palace 6 p.m. PST with a 150-mile local black out. Sullen Olson, who is prep ping for a November title de fense against Sugar Ray Robin son, has been posted a 3-1 fav orite over the Buffalo, N.Y., soldier who now boxes out of Fort Hood, Tex. This is Bobo's second fight since he was flattened in the 'Best Main & If you 1 third round of his assault on ivioore s iignt-n eavyweight crown. He outpointed Jimmy Martinez in Portland, Ore., Au gust 13 in the first of a combin ed "tuneup" and "comeback" series. Trouble Expected Sid Flaherty, Olson's manager, said he expects Giambra to be "troublesome for the first four or five rounds," then figures Ol son will start getting to him. The mannerly Giambra, who got a curt brushoff from Olson when they were introduced, hasn't made any rash predictions but Manager Mike Scanlan said "We know that knockout by Moore didn't help him any." August 26. 1955 Munger Pitches 20th Victory As Hollywood Trims Portland 7-4 By PETER HAYES United Press Sports Writer Hollywood's Red Munger, en joying the best season of his 18 year career, became the Pacific Coast League's first 20-game winner last night with a 7-4 triumph over Portland which kept the second place Stars ZVz games behind Seattle. The 36-year-old righthander tired in the last two innings when the Beavers reached him for four hits and three runs. But George Vico, George Freese and Bill Hall sparked an 11-hit Hollywood attack to boost Munger to his fifth straight win. Vico hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning off loser Bob Hall and Freese and Hall each banged out three hits. Munger walked one man in the eighth the first base on balls he had issued in 25 2-3 in nings. He gave up eight hits. First 20-Game Season The former Cardinal hurler has lost seven. Until this year he had never won 20 games in any one season. Elsewhere in the loop, Seat tle's Lou Kretlow posted his 13th win against one defeat with a three-hit 6-0 win over San Fran cisco; Oakland whitewashed San Moore caught up with him in New York. His record now is 64 wins and 7 defeats in 71 bouts with 30 knockouts to his credit. Giambra, built along the lines of a Greek hero, has won 41 of 45 fights and 24 by knockouts. His biggest victory was over Joey Giardello in 1952 after losing to the Philadelphia battler the year before. Giambra's other losses have been - to Johnny Cesario in 1951 and Bobby Dykes last year. He never has been stopped. Medford buy! MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEN Diego, 5-0, behind Chris Van Cuyk, and Sacramento walloped Los Angeles, 11-1, as Nippy Jones went five-for-five.
