Soda and the Stomach Bicarbonate of soda, aspirin, vitamin shots, bourbon, ulcer, ready access to dope to make one sleep or quiet the nerves. That doesn't seem quite all oh, yes, one other feature the business of lighting a cigarette. Without that, how could the Yankee Wiseacre achieve nonchalance? Some persons like to hear themselves talk. Others like to hear themselves belch. If they are not belching enough or with sufficient authority they take a dose of sodium bicarbonate, oth erwise known as bicarbonate of soda, baking soda. Ten to 20 grains of it, taken by 6ne with a healthy stomach, will generate enough gas (carbon dioxide) in the stomach to power a series of impressive belches. Such belching of large quanti ties of carbon dioxide (generated by the reaction of the acid of the gastric juice with sodium bicar bonate) mixed with air (gulped by the nervous patient, uncon sciously and unintentionally) constitutes many a bad "gas at tack." Although it may be harmless to take anywhere from a good pinch (five grains) up to a level teaspoonful of bicarbonate occa sionally, the frequent or habitual use of soda in even the smallest doses is bad medicine in almost any circumstance. Bicarbonate of soda is the weakest antacid in medical use, but is more likely to produce Ado Workers Strike Ai Pittsburgh Plant Milwaukee (U.R) CIO United Auto workers employees went on strike at Pittsburgh against the Allis Chalmers Manufactur ing Co. and walked off the job here yesterday, stopping produc tion at both plants. The walkout at Pittsburgh in volved 2100 production workers. The work stoppage was staged here so workers could attend a membership meeting to get a progress report on negotiations from union leaders. A strike has been scheduled for 2 p.m. local time at four Allis-Chalmers Co. plants. Com pany and union negotiators held last minute negotiations this morning to try to avert the strike. The company has granted union demands for a guaranteed annual wage, a master contract for the six plants and an all union shop at the parent West Allis plant near here. But the union held out for additional benefits and objected to signing a four-year .contract as the com pany proposed. Fire Doesn't Bother Cub's Bridge Players Racine, Wis. '(U.R) Bridge players are well known for the ability to concentrate on their game, but Racine's Duplicate Bridge club carried the thing to an extreme recently. The members were playing at the Elks club when the building caught fire. Firemen rushed in with extinguishers as smoke poured from a washroom, but the bridge games in progress continued without interruption. Amazed firemen reported that a few of the players glanced up briefly when the firemen troop ed in, but non one left his seat. When bicarbonate is taken fre quently or regularly the reaction of the urine should be watched. If the urine becomes persistently alkaline precipitation of phos phatic stones in the urinary tract may follow. In any case of stomach trouble the relief the sufferer gets from antacids is not entirely due to neutralization of acid. In so called "hyperacidity" pain may occur when acidity is low and subside or be absent when acid ity is high. Sometimes a single dose of an anti-acid taken at the end of digestion relieves "hunger-pain" or "empty-pain" for hours or through the night, al though, hyperacidity soon re turns in higher degree than be fore. So you see, antacids relieve discomfort, distress or pain due to other causes than excessive acidity. This is true to bicarbon ate of soda, but more particular- ! ly is it true of calcium carbonate and magnesium trisilicate These i tr fc. aVataB r f .
