Driving Tips Given On 4 Bad Practices
Detroit (U.R) Driving too
fast or too slow, just plain stop
ping and behind-the-wheel hyp
nosis those are the four most"!
dangerous practices on the na
tion's new super-highways.
Th automotive irdustry
makes these suggestions for safe
super-highway travel
gl. Speed is 'the greatest dang
er) Don't let the long straight
CD vys hire you into traveling too
fast.
2. Be especially wary of behind-the-wheel
hypnosis. To keep
your mind on your driving,
avoid staring steadily at the
highway. Keep your eyes mov
ing from rear-view mirror to
the roadside, to the dashboard
and then back to the road ahead.
3. Don't stop unless it's abso
lutely necessary. Sudden stops
often cause rear-end collisions
involving- many cars. ,
4. Remember that going too
slow also can cause trouble. The
best rule is to keep your speed
about the same as the rest of the
traffic.
Orchardist Reveals His
Best 'Scarecrow' Method
East Jordan, Mich. (U.R)
Orchardist A. E. Darby today
disclosed a new method of keep
ing pesty birds from fruit orch
ards without using the old-fashioned
scarecrow.
Darby said all you need to
keep your orchard bird - free is
a tent, a shotgun and a pair of
good, stout climbing shoes. He
says to pitch the tent on a plat
form or tower in the orchard,
wait until the birds come to
roost in the fruit trees, and fire
the shotgun.
After several volleys, Darby
said the birds give his orchard a
wide berth as long as they see
the tent pitched.

David J. McDonald, president
of the Steelworkers Union, is a
pipe smoker. He is said to be
one of this country's most bril
liant negotiators. Most clever ne
gotiators smoke pipes. There is
a reason. They keep the pipe go
ing while negotiating. To speak
they have to take the pipe out
of the mouth. This prevents them
from speaking without first
thinking carefully of what they
are going to say. Keep this in
mind. Even if you are a cigar
or a cigarette smoker take along
a pipe when you talk business
with a pipe smoker. When he is
talking keep your-pipe in your
mouth. In that way you will
have a chance to prevent his
getting the better of the deal.
Leo All-Stars
Under what sign are the best
ballplayers born? Why, sir, un
der the sign of Leo. That's what
I claim. I am at work assem
bling an all-time team of major
league Leos to prove it. I know
my club is going to be tough to
beat. Who do you think I have
for a battery? None other than
those two great Leo born fel
lows, Christy Mathewson and
"Big Chief" Meyers. I also have
Hank Gowdy as a backstop. Be
sides the great Mathewson, my
Leo pitching staff includes Bur
leigh Grimes. Freddie Fitzsim

And what an outfield the all

Loyal Customer
Lady Docker, one of London's
gayer socialites, says she dined
at the Cafe de Paris 185 nights
in one year. Sounds like the
loyal night club customer record
but it isn't. There's a man in
Manhattan who dines at El Mo
rocco every night and has been
doing so for several years.
Speaking of loyal customers, I
believe the New York record is
held by a customer of Libby's
Restaurant. That man ate all his
meals, three a day, at Libby's
for 63 years!
Sidelights
What are you going to give
your mother-in-law for her birth
day? Did you know there are
"mother-in-law earrings" on the
market? . . . This year is the
15th anniversary of the writing
of the song "Kiss Me Again."
Note it said that Cissie Loftus,
the actress, was Irish. That's
wrong. It is true her real name
was Marie Cecilia McCarthy, but
she was Scottish.

Carved Frog Replica
Found in Mesa Ruins
Mesa, Ariz. (U.R) A carved
seashell replica of a frog has
been uncovered in the Mesa
Grande Indian ruins near here.
The seashell, decorated with
pieces of turquoise, was found
with the remains of an infant.
Dr. Kenneth Stewart, director
of the excavation from Arizona
State college, said the frog was
a valuable piece and indicated
the ruins were rich in artifacts.
In the same location were a
small bowl and numerous beads
believed to have been attached
to the child's clothing.
The remains of the child were
dug from beneath a hallway be
tween two rooms probably used
by the Indians for storage. Dr.
Stewart said the Indians com
monly buried their infants un
der their floors or walls.
