Draw For Cup Round Thursday New York UR) John Fos ter Dulles, secretary of state, will make the draw on Thurs day for the Davis cup challenge round between the United States and Australia. The U. S. Lawn Tennis assoc iation announced that the draw would be made at the West Side Tennis club, Forest Hills, N.Y., site of the matches which begin on Friday. Two singles matches are scheduled Friday, one doubles match Saturday, and two singles matches Sunday. The U. S. team, defending the cup,, which is symbolic of world tennis supremacy, consists of Tony Trabert of Cincinnati, O., Vic Seixas of Philadelphia, Ham Richardson of Baton Rogue, La., and Gil Shea of Los Angeles. Trabert and Seixas, who played all five matches last year, are expected to do the same again. G The challenging Australian squad is made up of Lew Hoad, Ken Rosewall, Rex Hartwig and Neale Fraser. Hoad and Rosewall are expected to carry the singles burden. Metkovich Leads PCL San Francisco (U.R) Veteran George Metkovich, Oakland outfielder, hangs onto the Pacific Coast league hitting leadership with a .336 average, according to statistics released today and in cluding Sunday's games. Metkovich upped his average three points from the previous week to take a 17-point lead over runner-up Buddy Peterson of San Diego, who has a .319 mark. Meanwhile, another veteran, Lou Kretlow of Seattle, lost his first game of the year, but stayed at the top of the pitching marks with a 12-1 record. Steve Bilko of Los Angeles leads in home runs with 32 and Is tied with Nippy Jones of Sac CJamento in hits with 168 each. Earl Rapp of San Diego has driven in 122 runs. The strikeout leader for the pitchers is Bob Garber of Holly wood with 171. (U.R) Former hfcjh school football players from the Boise and Snake River val leys settled down to a tough schedule of scrimmage games to prepare for the Elks all-star gams at Ontario next Saturday. Coach Gen Glore of the SRV team said he would push his squad hard today and Wednes day, with tapering off ' drills scheduled for Thursday. Only two games were played and in each the home town out- hit the invaders, but lost. Los Angeles made the trip to Sacramento and won out 4-2 over the Solons. Sacramento got 13 hits and the Angels eight. Portland likewise went to Hollywood for a 4-3 win. Holly wood got 10 hits to seven by the Beavers. Tonight the league resumes full scale maneuvers with Seattle playing a doubleheader at San Francisco and the rest of the loop single games. Hatten Wins 9th Joe Hatten won his ninth vic tory of the season for Los An geles with the aid of Steve Bil- ko's bat and tight pitching with men on base. Sacramento belted Hatten for 13 hits but the old left-hander fanned 11 and left 10 runners stranded. Bilko sent home one run with a sacrifice fly in the first in ning and then blasted home two more in the third with a single. Sacramento used four pitch ers with Bud Watkins, the start er, taking the loss. Bob Hall came to the rescue of Dick Waibel in the fourth in ning for Portland and held the Melis Matched With Vejar In TV Fight New York -(U.R) Paolo Melis of Montreal, former - welter weight champion of Italy, was matched today for a 10-round TV fight with seventh-ranking Chico Vejar at St. Nicholas Are na on Oct. 17 as a reward for Monday night's victory over middleweight Rinzi Nocero. Melis, an 11-5 underdog, won a unanimous 10-round decision Over Nocero of Brooklyn in their TV bout at St. Nick's. Toughy Nocero lost two rounds on low blow fouls and was warned four other times for rough-house tactics. Doubles Rest With Unseeded Young Net Stars Chestnut Hill, Mass. 0J.R) American hopes for keeping the National tennis doubles crown in the United States rested today with a pair of promising but un seeded youngsters who have al read3' down two seeded tandems. The lads in question, Jerry Moss and Bill Quillian, saw to it themselves, in fact, that they were tops in contention by dis posing of the only remaining domestic seeded entries in the 75th doubles tourney Monday. Moss, a 19-year-old from St. Petersburg, Fla., who is rated the best junior singles player in the nation,' and his 21year-old Seattle, Wash., teammate, squeaked by fourth seeded Eddie Moylan of Trenton, N.J., and Cliff Mayne of Berkeley, Calif., in third round action Monday, 6-4, 6-2, 1-6, 5-7, 6-3. With the demise of Messrs. Mayne and Moylan only two seeded tandems remained and they were both foreign. The rest of the ranking teams hav either defaulted in the rain delayed tourney in order to play in the Davis Cup challenge round, or were eliminated earlier. Air Force, Army Tied in Tennis Quantico, Va.' (U.R) The Air Force, defending team cham pion, was tied with the Army-today at three points each as the inter-service . tennis champion ship entered the second day of competition. The Navy had two points and the Marine Corps none. Roger Pharr of Orlando, Fla., the third-seeded Army player, scored the big upset of the first day's play when he defeated Marine champion Allen Tong of Los Angeles, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. The day's most spectacular fin ish saw Navy champion Ben So bierja' of St. Louis, Mo., beat fourth-seeded Don Kaiser, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4, and then collaps from heat exhaustion as they shook hands across the net. The match was played in 93 degree heat. City Beavers Down Gaston In Pro Meet Portland 4U.R) The defend ing champion City Beavers de feated a surprising Gaston club 11-5 last night to oust the losers from the State American Base ball Congress semi-pro baseball tourney. . The losers' bracket victory ad vanced City Beavers to tonight's semi-finals, where they will meet the Bashor Babes. The New York team assumed the role of favorite after besting the San Francisco 49ers in Seat tle last Saturday. The Giants won by a 28-17 score. Quarterbacks Charlie Conerly and Don Heinrich and fullback Bobby Epps were expected to provide the offensive punch for the Giants, more than offsetting the throwing arm of the Rams' Norm Van Brocklin. At Salem, meanwhile, the Gi ants announced that ex-Oregon State star Bill Austin will start at offensive guard against the Los Angeles club. The 225-pound Austin sat out last Saturday's contest with a twisted knee. Little League World Series Underway Williamsport, Pa.
