John T. Sprague, commanding general of Lowry Air Force Base, says that having the summer White House at the base presents very few new prob lems and actually helps with a lot of old ones. Morale picks up noticably when President Eisenhower and his staff are on the base, Sprague said. Getting personnel to "tight en up" is no problem, he told a reporter. As for the extra trouble in volved in the White House in vasion, there's nothing to it, he said. This is the third summer that Mr. Eisenhower has set up shop here a ad the base is so fa- Q miliar with the necessary ar q rangerncnts that everything goes off smoothly, k But there's one thing Sprague must handle personally getting himself to the base headquarters entrance before 8 a.m. to greet the President. Mr. Eisenhower is f seldom more than a few minutes o later than that and sometimes earlier. 6 The President seems to enjoy 0 every minute of his five day so- u journ in the cool mountains of his vacation ranch near Fraser Colo., especially the trout fishing U in the brisk waters of St. Louis creek. But there were many signs that he missed another "first love" his golf. q Although he put in plenty of Qlishing time at Fraser, the Presi- aeni every aay goi in a iew prac tice licks with his golf clubs. He worked especially on his iron game aiming at a six-foot square white target in a meadow 150 yards away and practicing chip shots into two net targets at shorter distances. O However, the chief executive admitted his grandson, David 7, needs more practice. "He's gone back some in his golf," the Presi dent told newsmen after the boy failed to land a chip shot in the target nets at 20 yards despite 12 tries. The White House was coy about giving out any details of the comfortable new three bed room rambler recently built on the ranch near Fraser by Mr. Eisenhower's host, Aksel Neil sen. But newsmen quickly found the floor plan in the catalogue of a prefabricated home builder and described it in detail. The house is barely visible from the nearest roads. But several of the White House press corps, quartered at Ara- paho Guest Ranch on a ledge above Fraser, found they had a clear, although distant, view of the house across the valley from their own front porch. When reporters set up their temporary press room in the tiny wooden railroad station at Fra ser, they found the following notice on the wall with no ex planation: "Notice. Effective July 1, 1955, all city ordinances of the town of Fraser will be enforced. C. B. Clayton, Mayor." Mayor "Chuck" Clayton, who operates the town's leading res taurant, bar, filling station, mo tor court and what not, explain ed to visiting reporters that it wasn't aimed at them. Seems folks hacJ been getting careless Vehicle Sales Increase in Stale Salem (U.R) Sales of new au tomobiles and trucks and motor vehicle registration is at an all time high more than 800,000 in Oregon, according to Secre tary of State Earl T. Newbry. Newbry, under whose office the Mofbr Vehicle Department now operates, said 41,037 new cars were sold in Oregon from Jan. 1 to June 30 this year, com pared with 27,105 in the first six months of 1954. Commercial vehicle saies also increased with 9961 trucks sdld during the six-month period com pared to 5845 in the first six months of 1954. (Registration of all types of motor vehicles likewise in creased, with a total of 456,660 vehicles registered to bring in fees totaling S6.869.487. Regis tration in the first six months of 1954 totaled 426,484. Registration in the fix.it six months this year showed 80.958 passenger cars, 903 exempt cars owned by the state, counties and cities. 1296 busses. 68.840 trucks and 4563 motorcycles. Driver's licenses now are held by 1.028,787 persons in Ore gon. Newbry noted that one out of every seven drivers is past the age of 60. TOO MANY TONGUES New Orleans (U.R) Joan Barrios, just returned from a Mexican tour to brush up on her Spanish, was amazed when a de partment store clerk here called for an interpreter. The mystery was cleared up when Miss Bar rios realized she had absent mindedly used Spanish when asking for lipstick. Use Tribune Want Ads Quick in Results! Low in costs!
