Iodoform was as impressive to the laity of that era as a "shot" of this month's antibiotic is to some custmers today. More so, for not only the patient and next of kin, but the entire population of the district knew that heroic measures were being used. Just as I opened by office in Penn Yan there is too, and I can prove it a jar of iodo form, to let everybody know there was a new doctor in town some scientific killjoy published a report of his study of the an tiseptic or germicidal efficiency of numerous agents then in use. The tests showed that iodoform was not only of questionable an tiseptic value but disease gerrns would readily grow in it! So, if I uncorked my jar then well, it became a total loss. In the twenties and thirties some physicians and nurses were fond of using a proprietary pre paration of crude carbolic acid mixed, equal parts, with liquid soap. This had all the properties of crude carbolic, including the poisonous. Because of its "germ icidal" odor and the tint it gave the water in which it was dis solved, many old age fogies were persuaded to consider it a good all-around antiseptic and germi cidal agent for personal or house hold use. I can assert without fear of contradiction that there is no evidence whatever to warrant the use of any such poison in personal or domestic hygiene. Indeed, there is no evidence that anything more than washing with plain soap and water is necessary to disinfect or make perfectly safe the floors, walls, furniture or bedding of a room lately occupied by a person with contagious, infectious or other disease. Only archaic institutions still practice "fumigation" of rooms or premises after scarlet fever, smallpox, diptheria, meningitis. Whether for disinfecting uten sile, personal objects, equipment, furniture, clothing, bedding, toys that have been used by one with a- communicable disease; or for first aid disinfection of wounds; or for keeping mouth and gums and teeth clean; or for dressing old infected wounds, burns or ul cers; all I want is a cake of plain white soap and plenty of boiled water. Crowds gathered early for the initial event in the week-long observance of the sequicehten nial anniversary of the arrival of Lewis and Clark to the Pacific Northwest. Twenty-seven Explorer Scouts and their leaders arrived at the Fort in four canoes similar to those used by the first white men to arrive in the Pacific Northwest from the interior. At Seaside today, Sen. Richard L. Neuberger addressed a crowd at a dedication of the salt cairn used by the explorers 150 years ago. Neuberger said the prevailing opinion in America always had been hopeful. He said that sen timent motivated Lewis and Clark when they moved into un known country. , Portland (U.R) E. C.
