David is also getting a little tutoring in fishing from his famous grandpa. o O Army Dismisses Three Of Ten Accusations Against Major Alley O O Fort Meade, Md. U.R The wArmy today dropped three q charges against Maj. Ronald E. r, Alley, 34, as it opened trial of the 14-year veteran accused of G collaborating with the enemy -while a prisoner in Korea. The discarded charges includ c ed allegations that Alley had pro moted "disloyalty" among fel low prisoners and voluntarily ccepted instruction in Commu- nift ideas to advance the enemy cause. C Chargtd on Seven Counts The major remained charged on seven other counts which in Cluded giving the enemy infor mation about the fire direction of American artillery, urging fellow POWs to give the Com Gmunists military information, in forming on fellow prisoners, (leading propaganda discussion groups, and writing propaganda carticles for the enemy. x Defense attorney Ford E. r.-Young Jr. demanded dismissal cof the case on grounds that the charges amount to treason and rJjhould be heard in a civilian f'tourt -w "The charges are ridiculous," iVoung said, "but if they must be Jeard, the Constitution requires cthat they be heard in a civilian 'tribunal, not by the military Alley is the fourth' American tofficer to be tried on collabora ttion charges. Two others were Gacquitted and one was dismissed rfrom the service. Eight enlisted men have been convicted of col laboration. 'Gallagher Sentenced The most recent case was that c-ot Sgt. James C. Gallagher, Brooklyn, who was sentenced to oJife imprisonment in New York CFriday for the murder of two rfellow prisoners and other ('fcrimes while a Korean POW. f ) In a complaint filed in Federal Ucourt in Washington last week, QUley contended: ?, The Army, in effect, is accus ing him of "treason": the Con stitution requires that treason cbe tried in civil courts: and the ( Army's so-called "tough policy" ;ipn offenses committed in Korean prison camps precludes a fair trial. The court has not yet acted on the complaint. If the court martial proceeds without inter ruption, however, it is expected to continue for several months. Youth Charged With Auto Theft Jack Eugene Miller, 18, of 120 Oak st., Rogue River, was ar rested and jailed yesterday in connection with the theft of an automobile from in front of Bush Furniture' company on Highway 99 north, Saturday. The vehicle, owned by Ken neth Howe, 911 South Peach st., Medford, was recovered in Rogue River. A Nichol's Worth of . . . O Soviet Magazine Hopes Eden Will Visit Russia London (U.R) The Soviet "magazine "N e w s' expressed hope today that British Prime Minister Anthony Eden would (vjsit Russia soon. O Moscow Radio quoted the publication as saying it "hopes the Soviet public will soon have the opportunity to welcome Sir Anthony Eden who has already visited Moscow on previous occasions." As a matter of fact "J i m m i e" is just a nick name and S. Sgt. V i r g inia Ann pickel is very m u c h a lady. If she does any fight ing at all, it is merely to sass the 100 men who surround her. Harman Nichol "A c t ually, she told me over lunch, "we get along fine." "Jimmie" is publicity director of the United States Marine band. It was quite a switch for her when she took over the job on the retirement of S. Sgt. Mar gie Moore not long ago. Not a Musician The new press agents has disinction no other person in the service can claim in a compara' ble job. She holds two college degrees neither of which has anything to do with music, al though she had heard of the treble clef when she took over. "Oh." she said, "I used to dab ble a little with the mandolin, but I didn't get very far with it." At Temple university in Phila delphia she majored in athletics and . education, and came out with a bachelor of science de gree. Later she taught athletics, such as basketball, lacrosse, ten nis, track, hockey and other sports. A Master's Degree That was after she got her masters degree in education at Northwestern university, "Jimmie" was listening to the radio one day in 1951 and heard there was need for lady Marines. So she joined up. The oboe player, tuba boys and bassoonists give her no trou ble at all. It is not, of course, tier job to teach the enlisted bands men to tootle. That work is left to Capt. Albert Schoepper, who knows his music from "A" to "G" including all of the combi nations in flats and sharps. "Jimmie" and the rest of the Marines are proud of the sit down or string band which is on call at all times for concerts at the White House and other places. Russian Farmers In Washington Washington (U.R) The No 1 farmers of the United States and Russia sat down together today for the first time in his tory to swap yarns about sur pluses, shortages, and their other troubles. The occasion was an unprece- ented meeting today between Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson and Vladimir. Vladimiro vich Matskevich, first deputy minister of Soviet agriculture, A get-together like this would have been unthinkable in the old days of the cold war. But in the present relaxed atmosphere it's right in style. Besides, Mat skevich is getting to be a pretty familiar figure. He's the head of the 12-man delegation of Russian farm ex perts who have been touring American farm lands for the last 44 days. The delegation came into town Sunday night from Los Angeles on the last leg of their trip. They'll get red-carpet treat ment while they're here today and Tuesday. Benson interrupted a vacation to take personal charge of the reception. He met privately with Mat skevich, arranged to see the whole group immediately after ward, and planned a lunch in their honor later. The delegation also will hold a series of conferences with top Agriculture Department experts on everything from livestock production to farm machinery, They said they will sum up their views on American farm ing in an appearance before the National Press Club Tuesday. In Berlin Sunday, a group of Amer ican farmers who have just completed a tour of Russia re ported that Russian farmers have only the bare necessi ties" of life but are content be cause their lot is now better than ever before. Two Men Hurt in Eugene Plane Crash Eugene, Ore. (U.R) A Cal ifornia airman and his brother from Eugene were seriously in jured yesterday afternoon when their light plane struck power lines and crashed near West moreland grade school here. M-Sgt. John E. Adams, 30, Ox nard AFB, and Charles Williams Adams, 34, were both taken to Eugene hospital suffering sev ere cuts and other injuries. The two men were on a plea sure ride after Sgt. Adams had flown the plane up from Cali fornia on a week end visit. The crash apparently was caused by failure of the fuel injection mech anism.
