They have more seats at stake than (She Democrats and substantially more in the closely contested states, g Since the Democrats recaptur ed control of the Senate in the (1954 elections, the division has (been 49 Democrats and 47 Re publicans. Thirty-two of the 96 seats will be filled in 1956, plus any vac ancies which may be created (in the coming year. Of the 32, the Republicans G Transit Strike Ends At Washington, D.C. Washington (U.R) Trolleys and buses rolled out of moth balls and onto their regular schedules today providing thous Gands og government workers and capital residents with public transportation for the first time in almost two months. The 53-day-old strike was the second longest transit walkout in any major American city. It Qwas topped only by a 56-day strike in Detroit in 1952. Residents paid a little more for rides today than they did before members of the AFL Transit Union walked out July J against the Capital . Transit Tiompany, headed by financier Louis E. Wolfson. The 20-cent cash fare remain ed unchanged, but token fares and weekly permits were in creased. O JJQUOR COSTS O McLeansboro, 111. However, five of the GOP seats are in relatively "safe" arenas Vermont, New Hamp shire, Kansas, North Dakota and South Dakota. Republican hopes for picking up seats next year rest largely on winning posts now held by Democrats in Missiouri, New York, Oregon and Washington, where GOP hopes have been given a lift by the jolting intern al Democratic party fight this year in that normally Democratic state. Against these five states, Dem ocrats will be concentrating on eight to a dozen states to pick up seats now held by Republi cans. Among these are Califor nia, Colorado, Connecticut, Ida ho, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio, Arctic Ice Shelf Being Melted Away By Warmer Weather By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (U.R) During the August heat it is cooling to know that Arctic weather has warmed up enough for science to foresee the melting away of the ice shelf extending outward from the northwest ' coast of Ellesmere Island, in -80 years or so. Ellesmere is the northern most extension of Canada to ward the North Pole. On the other side of the pole from Ellesmere is European Russia and so it is of prime importance in the defense of the North Amer ican continent from any attack across the top of the world. Shelf Not Holding Own G. Hattersley-Smith, Canad ian Arctic scientist who was a member of an exploratory party in Northern Ellesmere in the summers of 1953 and 1954, re ported that in the present warm ing climate, the huge ice shelf which is miles wide and more than 80 feet deep, was not even holding its own. A slight further warming of Arctic summer weather would be "extremely destructive" and cause the shelf to melt away in some 80 years, he said in his re port to the Arctic Institute of North America. Arctic weather has been warming for years; there is no reason to believe it won't continue for some time. Last summer was so warm up near the Arctic, Circle that 24 inches of ice on the ice shelf melted away. In August there were a number of hot days with temperatures in the upper 50s. No Accumulation of Ice Hattfrsley-Smith said he had "confirmed" that there had been no net accumulation of ice on the shelf in the last 45 years. As to how long the shelf had been attached to the island shore, he figured it couldn't be any longer than the Christian era. Geologi cally speaking, that's almost like saying, yesterday. Scientists who thought the ice shelf at least its foundation was a remnant of the last glacial age, have suggested its formation began 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. But Hattersley-Smith cited his findings to dispute glacial origin and hence, this considerable an tiquity. Indeed, he added, "it is perhaps unlikely to have existed even as recently as 500 B.C." Out Major Senate Pennsylvania and Utah.. Democrats Confident Senators also will be elected next year in the normally Re publican states of Iowa, Indiana and Wisconsin and the normally Democratic states of Arizona, Nevad and Oklahoma. Iowa el ected a Democrat to the Senate as recently as 1948 and Arizona and Nevada elected Republicans in 1952. Republicans need a net pick up of two seats to grab a major ity of the Senate. But they can win control with a pickup of one if they against elect a Vice President to cast a tie-breaking vote. Because of the lineup of seats at stake next year, Democrats are talking confidently of re taining control of the Senate, even if they fail to win the White House. However, no Pres ident has been elected since 1882 along with a . Senate controlled by the opposition party. PIER ANGELI HAS SON Hollywood (U.R) Film star Pier Angeli was reported "doing fine" today after giving birth to an 8-pound, 13-ounce boy at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital. The 22-year-old Italian-born actress, wife of Singer Vic Damone, gave birth to the child Sunday. Schmidt En Route For Portland Visit Portland (U.R) Airman Daniel C. Schmidt was en route to Portland today, still unsure of how he would solve his tangled marriage with a childhood sweet heart who remarried while he was a captive of the Chinese Reds. Schmidt left California Satur day en route to Portland for his first visit with his mother in more than three years. Before he left the small com munity of Childs Meadows, Cal., the modern day "Enoch Arden" disclosed he was . holding out hope for a possible reconciliation with his young wife, Una, even though he had charged her in a divorce suit with being an un fit mother. "There is a possibility," the 23-year-old airman said, "I'm not saying yes or no.' It's possible. I can't tell you more than that." Schmidt filed the divorce suit in Red Bluff Friday, charging Una was an unfit mother for their 21fc-year-old son, Danny, Jr. Increase Seen in ' Enrollments for Slate Colleges Eugene SJate higher educa tion administrators this week agreed that collegiate enroll ments next month will exceed the eight per cent increase pre dicted six months ago.
