Any poor geek may believe if he wishes that his chronic joint disability is rheu matism, or if he can afford a more exclusive name, arthritis. Moreover he can attribute his complaint to exposure to foul weather, cold, dampness and this dreadful climate and corrob orate the notion by citing emin ent medical authorities, from Dr. Osier right down to the best in the business today. Without discussing the sub ject in detail (for that, send me a stamped, self-addressed envel ope and ask for the pamphlet Calcium and Rheumatiz). I'll say here that a great many readers who have had personal experi ence with joint disability of long duration (over a year) have ob tained great benefit from the practice of supplementing their ordinary diet with a suitable daily ration of calcium and D. This is not medicine and it does not cure anything. It is simply essential food food which every one should get every day. Every one would get enough calcium and D to prevent such trouble if he consumed enough milk, cheese, eggs, green leafy vegetables, peas, beans, nuts and peanuts; and exposed as much skin as possible to sunlight or diffuse skylight daily, to manu facture the daily requirement of vitamin D. Besides the food mentioned, these foods are good sources of calcium for a high calcium or health diet: asparagus, lettuce, cabbage raw or only slightly cooked, celery, cauliflower, broc coli, beet greens, dandelion greens, turnip greens, mustard greens, oatmeal. A quart of milk contains ap proximately 15 grains of calcium. A healthy person excretes 10 to 12 grains of calcium through the intestine and two or three grains through the kidneys daily. If you don't know much about calcium metabolism, physiology and nutrition, don't fret about it a lot of doctors are in the same boat it may enlighten you to read Little Lesson 26, Ths Cal cium Shortage, for which send 25c and stamped, self-addressed envelope. Even if you have been assured that one gets plenty of minerals and vitamins from a "well balanced" diet, you may still get a laugh out of the multiplicity of common com plaints for. which I recommend more calcium. is. when it is in the paper, and I think this one may be of help to me. . . .
