Emergency Surgery John Snider Jr., 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Snider, 2327 East Main st., is at Community hospi tal where he is convalescing from emergency appendectomy. Lear Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Bowman, Bixby, Okla., left to day after visiting this week with Mrs. Alto Pruitt, 403 King st. They drove to Crater Lake and also fished in southern Oregon streams while here. Pasiei Exam John E. Givler, 310 West 11th st., has received notice that he has passed exam inations to qualify him as a cer tified public accountant. He is office manager at Jorgensen's dairy. Return Home Mr. and Mrs. Bill Nowman and two children returned this week to Oxnard. Calif., after visiting for several days at the Sitton home on Van couver ave. Nowman, a Navy seaman. Hoff man has returned to her home from Community hospital after being there for some time. Re cent visitors at the E. C. Cherry Beck, 3, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Beck, Phoenix, was dismissed from there today after being hospitalized" since Wednesday for medical care. To Return Mrs. Frank Cul len, Ross lane, and her sister-in-law, Mrs. Clayton Cullen of Sa lem are to return this weekend from a trip to the coast. From Gold Beach they made a trip up the Rogue river by mail boat fo Agness and they stopped at sev eral coastal towns. Dr. Cullen will arrive over the weekend to meet his wife and they will return to Salem. Grass Fire Central -Point rural firemen were summoned to a grass fire east of the Table Rock Lumber company mill in the Tolo district yesterday. Three rigs were dispatched to the scene. However, mill crew men had the blaze out when firemen arrived. A spark from a mill burner was thought to have caused the fire. Attends Course Dr. Burt L. Lageson, Medford dentist, is at tending an advanced course in crown and bridge work at the University of Oregon dental school this week in Portland. He is one of the 11 practicing den tists of the northwest enrolled in the limited postgraduate study covering five days. Dr. Lageson is a graduate of the state dental school. The course ends today. j Find Billfold James Lee Miller, 720 West Jackson st., re ported to the city police yester day that he found a billfold con taining miscellaneous papers and $23 in currency at the play grounds of Jackson school, ac cording to police records. An identification card bearing the name Danny Ray Thompson, Forest Lake, was found in the wallet. No state was given, po lice said. Mrs. Cyril J. Farns worth, 1724 West 11th st., re ported to the police department yesterday afternoon that her son, Douglas Earl Farnsworth, found a coin purse containing $13 in currency and $1.12 in coins on West Main st. between Hamilton st. and Ross Court, police said. Both the wallet and coin purse are now at the police department. Chln-Up Picnic - Members of the Jackson county chapter, Chin Up Club, will hold a pot luck picnic Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Wes ley Coffeen, 108 Stewart ave. Finds Saw Mel E. Gaguey, 428 Berrydale ave., reported finding a Mallsaw brand port able electric saw last night to the city police department, ac cording to police records. The saw was found in the Hawthorne park, police said. Intersection Mishap Automo biles operated by Steven John Dodge, 813 Beekman st. and Herbert G. Spurgeon, 514 Park Place 5, collided at 4:09 p.m. yes terday at the intersection of 10th and Laurel sts., according to city police department records. No injuries were reported and no citations were issued, police said. To Coast Mr. and Mrs. Rob ert Watson and children, Jeff, Janelle, Jeanette and Jerry, all of Portland, left this morning for Crescent City and other coast towns after visiting over night at the home of Mrs. Wat son's uncle, Frank Cullen, Ross lane. They arrived here by way of Crater Lake. CP Grange A meeting of the Central Point Grange mem bers is scheduled for Friday at 8 p.m. A business meeting will be conducted and then the group will go to Roxy Ann Grange hall to visit and attend a program which will be given by Phoenix Grange members. Those attend ing should take sandwiches and cookies for their group. A meet ing for the members of the juven ile group is set for Aug. 19. Visit Relatives Mrs. Charles H. Rauschke and Mrs. F. H. Retz laff of New Ulm, Minn., are vis iting at the home of Mrs. Rausch ke's brother, Mr. and Mrs. H. C. Hoenhe, 356 Oak Grove rd., and another sister, Mrs. D. A. Harris, 22Ji West Jackson st. They also are visiting a niece, Mrs. Lloyd Ferg and her family, 1736 Stew art ave. This is their first trip to the area and are making side trips to various points of inter est. They plan to be here for another week before returning home. Visiting Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wheeler of Tempe, Ariz., ar rived Monday to visit with numerous relatives and friends. They are former residents. Rela tives here include Mrs. Arthur Hess, a sister of Mrs. Wheeler and the women's mother, Mrs. R. H. Seegmiller, Central Point, also a brother, Leo Williams, of Medford. The Wheelers lived on Happy Valley rd., before leav ing here several years ago. They are former members of the Jack son County Mounted Sheriff's posse and Ladies Mounted troop. Measles Tops List In Disease Report A total of 13 cases of commun icable diseases, six from Ash land, were reported to the Jack son county Health department for the week ending Aug. 12, according to Dr. A. Erin Merkel, public health physician. Measles topped, other diseases with nine cases, four of which were in Medford and three in Ashland. Gold Hill and Camp White both reported one case. Three cases each of chicken pox, pneumonia and trench .mouth were found in Ashland. Prospect recorded one case of infectious hepatitis. Wayne Johnston News About Servicemen ASSIGNED Lt. Ted L. Hughes, recently of Portland and now residing in Medford, has been assigned to the Headquarters 304th Logisti cal command here, according to Col. William H. Prentice, com mander. ATTENDS COURSE Capt. Hugh H. Shurtlcff, 1860 Archer dr., Medford, a member of the 304th Logistical command here, is completing a two-weeks Army Reserve Officer's re fresher course at Fort IvIcClellan, Ala., according to Col. William H. Prentice, commander. Shurt leff is expected to return to Medford tomorrow. RETURN Capt. Gordon C. Hays, man ager of the Ashland Mortuary, and Capt. Kenneth B. Black, V. A. Domiciliary, Camp White, returned recently from two week refresher courses at Fort Benjamin Harrison, Indiana, ac cording to Maj. Jay M. Hamil ton, unit advisor of the 304th Logistical command hefe. Hays attended a USAR finance offic er's refresher course, and Black attended a USAR adjutant gen eral's refresher course, Hamil ton said. REASSIGNED Capt. Merle E. McGraw, route 1, Eagle Point, and Capt. Rich ard G. Sherrill, 20 Hamilton st., have, been reassigned from the 9417 Air Reserve Squadron to Headquarters 9091st Air Re serve group in Medford, accord ing to TSgt. W. S. Kistner. Captain MGraw has been as signed duties as group training officer and Captain Sherrill has been assigned as reserve infor mation officer. Maj. Oliver J. Blanchard, formerly of Central Point and reserve information officer for the 9091st Air group here has been reassigned to the 9416th Air Reserve squadron in Eugene wriere he now resides", Kistner added. Supervisors Okay Siskiyou Budget Yreka, Calif. The Siskiyou county board of supervisors has adopted a $8,709,417 budget for the coming year, it was an nounced this week. The general tax rate has been set at $2.55 for residents in un incorporated communities, and $2.33 Vz for those in incorporated towns. Last year's general tax rate was $2.12 for both unincorpo rated and incorporated areas, and the total budget was $8,- 549,160. Auditor Ernest Johnson told supervisors that the general tax is higher this year, in part, be cause the road tax approved recently by voters adds 2IV2 cents to the general tax for those in unincorporated areas. Supervisors passed the budget and tax rate by a 3-1 vote. The vote against the two measures was cast by Supervisor Clint Jackson. On Vacation Jimmie Glea son, 2684 Crater Lake highway, is on vacation this week from his work at Crescent City, Calif. He is employed by The California-Oregon Power company in the California city. Fern, 77, dean of the city council, died of a heart attack while watching the Gladiolus parade on SW Sixth st. about 11 a.m. yester day. He had served on the coun cil for 26 years. Mr. Fern was assisting with entertainment for wheelchair veterans of Camp White who were viewing the parade when he collapsed. He was taken into the Bell Stover Insurance agency office but died before regaining consciousness. He as born Nov. 3, 1877, in Worchester, N.Y., and came to Grants Pass in 1911. Survivors include his wife, Mary Fern, two step-sons and a step-daughter, three sisters, several nieces and nephews. L. B. Hall Funeral home is in charge of funeral arrangements. Obituaries MARIAN SUE MCCOY MIRIAM KAY MCCOY Graveside funeral services for Marian Sue McCoy and Miriam Kay McCoy, twin infant daugh ters of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond H. McCoy, Central Point, who died Sunday, ' were held today at Siskiyou Memorial park with the Rev. Wilbur A. Henry offi ciating. Conger-Morris funeral home was in charge of arrange ments. Besides the parents, survivors include the grandparents, Mrs. Louise Stagg, Central Point, and Mr. and Mrs. Edward Gaines, Medford. LEE LOPER Funeral services for Lee Loper, 67, of Trail, who died Wednesday, will be held in Conger-Morris chapel Saturday at 9 a.m. with the Rev. D. E. Mil lard officiating. Committal will be in Phoenix cemetery. The deceased was born in Wayne county, Nebraska, Sept. 22, 1887. He moved, to the Val ley View district near Ashland in 1938, living there for 16 years. For the past year and a half he has been living with his son at Trail." On June 9, 1917, in Faith, S.D., he was married to Kate Delany, who survives. Other survivors include two sons, John, Trail, and Lewis, Talent; a daughter, Mrs. Walter Wolfard, Ashland; three sisters, Mrs. Theodore Ellwanger, Rock lin, Calif.; Mrs. Ralph Tibbetts, Orenda, Calif., and Mrs. O. J. Cook, Bonesteel, S.D.; a brother, Avery, Armour, S.D.; eight grandsons, one ' granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. WCA Stop at North Bend Will Get CAB Hearing Washington U.R) A Civil Aeronautics Board hearing will be held here Friday to study the possibiliy of granting a per manent certification license for the West Coast Airlines stop at North Bend, Ore. MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVHN No Foul Play Seen In Puerifoy Deaths Washington (U.R) United States and Thai officials today rejected any suggestion that the deaths of Ambassador John. E. Puerifoy and nine-year-old son, Danny, were the result of foul play. Authorities at the State De partment and at the Thai Em bassy here said a newly re ceived report on Puerifoy's death on a Thailand highway Aug. 12 showed absolutely no evidence of foul play. They said it is clear that Puerifoy, U.S. ambassador to Thailand, and his son were traffic accident vic tims. The ambassador and his two sons were riding in a new sports car when it hit a truck on a narrow bridge. One son sur vived. Lana Turner Injured In Fall in Bathtub Hollywood .(U.R) Film star Lana Turner was confined to bed today for at least two weeks by her doctor who said she suffered a concussion when she slipped in her bathtub Monday in Aca pulco, Mexico. Earlier it was believed the actress had suffered only a back injury in the fall. Upon her re turn here by plane, however, examination by her physician, Dr. Cameron B. Hall, revealed she also had suffered a concus sion. Mormon Church Head Arrives in Scotland Prestwick, Scotland (U.R) President David O. McKay of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints arrived here by plane today from the United States. The 81-year-old world Mormon leader will be on hand tomorrow to greet the Salt Lake City Mor mon Tabernacle choir when it arrives by' ship to begin a 13 concert tour of Europe.
