(I$uge chunks of the face of Kon vakiton glacier on Mount ($iasta, northern California's (fjighest mountain peak, are freaking off continuously and plunging down deep ravines, liskiyou county authorities re fjnrted recently. G One mass, measuring 25 to S3 feet wide and 30 feet deep (and of undetermined length, (roke off some time during the past week and buried itself in the ravine below, making a bar rier to smaller breakups. iFire Chief Frank Melo of Mount Shasta took a party of five to investigate the glacier Monday. During the inspection five large ice fragments broke off and thundered down a near by canyon. Mud creek canyon has been carved into a mass of pillars and pallisades, as a re sult of the glacial action. The Melo party went to the 11,500 foot level and to the cen ter of the glacier, 200 feet from its summit and 100 feet from its face. They found that 17 water falls have developed, with the main one below the glacier 25 feet wide with a sheer drop of 200 feet. Water from this fall and all other water disappears into the mountain, Melo said. His party crossed 25 snow-ice fields and the sound of rushing water was heard beneath all. Tliey said the floor of Mud creek canyon is frozen and water emerges clear 2V2 miles below the glacier. It gushes through a crevice about a foot wide and six feet deep. As it forms into Mud creek the color of the water changes to opaque. Noontime temperature on the glacier registered 70 degrees, Melo said. G Italian Barber Achieves iO-Second Shave Without i' Spilling Customer's Blood Pozzuoli, Italy (U.R) An Ital ian barber named Antonio Bu ow, has achieved the 20-second shave. He claims to be the fast est shaver in the world. So far there have been no casualties. Not a drop of blood ha, been shed among Antonio's customers. And the customers say the shaves aret perfect ones good enough, sa'yp for a date with Gina Lollobrigida. Buono has been a speed shsver for only a year. It was (a year ago he read in the papers (that a German barber in Berlin, Erik Albert, was claiming the title with an official speed of 25 seconds. Offered Fi Shaves Antonio .Buono resolved at once to earn such an h6nor for Italy, where everyone knows they have the best barbers in the world. 0 Antonio offered free shaves to any of his friends who would CJet him practice on them. He had no trouble.-for the men of Puzzu oli. trusted him. Starting from a one-minute shave, Antonio worked within a rrimth to 30-second ones. Then he! slowly lopped off a second at a time until he perfected the tions." 20-second shave The time had come to show the world. A prominent Naples journalist was invited to witness the event. The reporter brought two friends, each equipped with precision watches.. Antonio selected one of his customers, lathered the face, and with razor poised awaited for the timekeepers' "via!" (go). Wins Praise With extraordinary jet strokes he swept over both cheeks and chin. He whipped off a little nest of peachy hair on the ad am's apple and raised his arms above his head in victory. The timekeepers clicked their watches 16 seconds! It seemed impossible, but there it was on both watches. The Naples journalist rushed off with his story. Next day, the Naples Federation of Provincial Arti sans officially took note of the event with a glowing letter, which now hangs in Antonio's shop in a frame. The letter says: "The brilliant supremacy in shaving achieved for Italy by your admirable art as a master barber makes this federation very proud. (A) Your mother-in-law is tY selfish one. Surely she could see how unfair it is to you and the baby to require her son to soend most of his free time away from you. Why not try to compromise? Suggest that your in-laws come By ELIZABETH HURLOCK, PH.D. to your home several evenings a week. If they have no car, let your husband pick them up and take them home. Do the same over week ends. Let them be with you one day and let your husband go to their home the other. Very soon your baby will be awake more dur ing the day and his schedule can be more flexible. Then it will be good for him to spend a day a week at the home of his grand parents. Consider this arrange ment only a temporary one un less everyone like it well enough to make it permanent. (Copyright 1955, General Fea tures Corp.) Massachusetts Polio Epidemic Lessening Boston (U.R) Massachusetts health officials felt "somewhat encouraged'' today by the reduc tion of cases in polio epidemic reports. Dr. Roy F. Feemster, director of the state Division of Com municable Diseases, said the 77 cases reported Monday were "reason to feel somewhat en couraged." The state reported 92 cases on Monday last week. The new cases boosted the total so far this year to 1,235 compared to 126 cases at the same time last year. Dr. Samuel B. Kirkwood, Mas sachusetts health commissioner, said, "daily figures now indicate it may be peaking in Boston." Boston has reported 442 cases during the current outbreak. The 12 cases reported unoffi cially Monday were the lowest in 10 days. Potato Growers Vote To Hold Part of Crop Boise -(U.R) The Idaho-Eastern Oregon Potato Control Com mittee has voted unanimously to withhold 25 per cent of the top grades this fall to combat a threatened surplus. Late last month growers 'and shippers had voted to take no immediate action. Committee Secretary Kay Harte of Pocatello said produc ers and shippers in. Idaho and Oregon's Malheaur county have since changed their thinking. He added that the committee's rec ommendation will be forwarded to Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson, who is expected to automatically approve the resolution. TWO IN ONE Preston, Conn.
