Medford Monkeys ed pig-faced monkeys, to run up and bring down what he wanted and it worked very well. He probablv used a lead to direct them here or there, I suppose." Sir George, who is 63, but has the vigor and animation of a far younger man, gesticulated. "You see," he said, "the com bination of the hand and eye is an extremely valuable one. Monkeys have it. Its use has serious possibilities." "Do you mean you would train monkeys to do monotonous factory jobs now tying down hu mans?" "Well," said Sir George, "I did consider factory work for them but I don't think now that I would put them where things are mechanized. Rather I would use Vandals Damage Senate Painting Washington (UR)-A vandal scarred one of the Senate's most famous paintings last spring The Battle of Lake Erie and left an enormous repair job. The Battle of Lake Erie is no ordinary painting, but a giant oil, 20 feet high and 30 feet long. It hangs over the marble staircase leading to the Senate gallery. The paintnig depicts Commo dore Oliver Hazard Perry and a cabin boy being rowed in an open boat from the commodore's disabled flagship "Lawrence" to the brig "Niagara." It is a cru cial moment in the 1813 battle that swept the British from the Great Lakes. It was immediately after this battle that Perry sent he mes sage that has thrilled Americans for more than a century: "We have met the enemy and they are ours." No one yet knows how the painting was damaged. POLICE ON THE JOB Nashville, Term. "I'm talking, of course, of monkeys," he went on. "Its a hard job to train gorillas. They're awful fiery brutes, you know. But monkeys could do light jobs, stuff too dull for a man." Book Planned Sir George paused and stared ahead as though looking into the future. In fact he has already looked far ahead in a provocative and eagerly awaited book, "The Foreseeable Future," which will be published in Britain and the United States in the fall. He said he has touched on monkey labor in the book but had elaborated his ideas since. "Many routine things can be done by machines," he said. "But there are things which while ap parently the same are really dif ferent. Such as picking apples. Each apple is different, you see." He pointed out that monkeys breed fairly rapidly. "We'd have to go at it care fully, pick the best breeds, prob ably the pig-faced such as the way we've bred domestic ani mals. Using monkeys for light labor apparently would not be difficult if anybody took the trouble to do it." And Sir George departed leav ing me with many thoughts a future executive phoning his wife to say he was being kept downtown by monkey business, and monkeys on strike for more nuts and bananas.
