'Wisdom of Body' May Be Influencing Mind on Food Choice By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (U.R) Three nutri tional scientists urge the truth of this "broad" principle: A "wis dom of the body," chemical in nature, may be influencing our minds to the good when we se lect our food and drink. When our customary diet nourishes up properly, this "wis dom of the body" is strengthened and it becomes harder for us to settle for food and drink which do not provide sufficient nour ishment. But when our customary diet is improper nutritionally speaking the "wisdom of the body'' is weakened, the selection of food and drink becomes more nutritionally foolish, and so nu tritional deficiency piles up. Phone Talbot 6-2711 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THIRTEEN their views on precise experi ments with rats which demon strated that deficient diets caused those animals to increase their consumption of alcohol or sugar and thus increase their nutri tional deficiencies. Alcoholics Poorly Nourished They saw a definite parallel between the nutritional habits of rats and people although they agreed with other scientists that this parallel could not be drawn too closely. The ultimate point of their experiments is that in some people alcoholism can be a nutritional disease. It is a well known fact that most alcoholics are very poorly nourished they simply do not consume the food and drink which provide sufficient vita mins, minerals, and other. diet ary essentials. Some scientitsts have argued, however, that ex periments with rats have no bear ing on human beings because (1) rats don't drink alcohol to get drunk and (2) rats will turn from alcohol to sugar if given a chance, but human beings won't. The Texas scientist denied that alcoholics always sought drunk eness "even though it is a widely taught doctrine." It is often a part "of the story" but it is only a part, they said in the Yale Quarterly Journal of Studies on Alcohol. Alcohol craving, they continued, "may not in its origin be fundamentally unlike other cravings, for example, of a her bivorous animal for salt, or a dehydrated individual for water, except that like the craving some diabetics have for sugar and nar cotic addicts for narcotics, it is a craving that leads toward phys iological harm rather than bene fit. Bats Not Drunkards "It seei.is clear that rats, when they consume alcohol, do not contemplate or anticipate drunk enness, but the important gusta tory signals which are involved in human alcoholism may be par alleled in rats, and these signals may -be induced in rats and in humans by the same fundamen tal mechanism nutritional de ficiency." Only superficially do rat bodies handle nutritional ele ments like human bodies. They pointed out that rats build their own ascorbic acid from sugars, but human beings must get as corbic acid from their diets. With many diets, rats can get along without niacin but human beings need niacin whatever their diet. These differences could explain why rats will turn from alcohol Home of MONTAG Wood HEATERS Trade-ins Accepted Liberal Credit Terms MONTGOMERY'S 1640 Ashland St. - Ashland, Or. Ph. They did not suggest that nu tritional deficiencies were all there' is to alcoholism. Their studies demonstrated all over again that the individuality of rats parallels the individuality of human beings each rat and each human being is different from all other rats and human beings. Heredity makes for this individuality, and that is why their "broad principle" had to be "broad." Use Mail Tribune Want Ada Tanks just tfiesame? -1 eieuni water heaters may look alike, but...
