SALT IN THE SUMMER TIME We work hardest at it or or play, if yoii like in the dog days. Sometimes a player loses six to eight pounds weight dur ing a game. What advice have you to prevent dehydration of the body in the summer time? (R. M.) Take five grains of common table salt with every drink of water. This not only prevents dehydration but in everyday practice wherever people work, play or march in extreme heat it has proved the best way to prevent heat stroke, sun stroke, heat exhaustion, heat cramps. In industrial plants where ex posure to extreme heat is un avoidable it is now the custom to have a salt tablet dispenser alongside the drinking font to provide the necessary salt with every drink of water. A reader who plays a lot of golf in the summer says she has "heard some sad tales about the effects of too much salt" and so she would hesitate to take any. Inevitably. Anything I recom mend here, anything that is cheap and freely available, pres ently becomes dangerous and available only on prescription. Not common table salt, perhaps, but believe me, knuckleheads, if some people could set up a new "regulation" to restrict the sale of salt without arousing vociferous popular indignation, Around Hollywood By ALINE MOSBY United Press Correspondent Editor's note: Aline Mosby is on va cation. For today's guest column, Doris Day writes about the recent change in her career. By DORIS DAY Wriiien for the United Press Hollywood (U.R) Everybody in Hollywood is asking me what I think of my "change of pace" assignment in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Man Who Knew Too Much," and opposite Jimmy Cag ney in "Love Me or Leave Me." Well, I like it fine except it isn't quite as drastic a change as everybody seems to think. Oh, I'll admitthat an Alfred Hitch cock suspense thriller must ap pear somewhat unusual for a girl with my background. But that part is not as off-beat as many suppose. Sher Some Tears While I don't put myself in the Greta Garbo or Bette Davis league, the dramatic bit is not really new to me. I have had emotional and dramatic scenes in most of my pictures and I've even shed tears in many of them. The difference in the Hitchcock vehicle is that it's a mystery drama as compared with the usual musical I make. "In many ways, however, the picture does represent a signifi cant chapter in my career. It is not a musical I only sing two songs and there is greater em phasis on story. From that stand point it is a decided change of pace for me. It's different from practically everything I've done and may convince Hollywood that I can do more than sing. Won't Slop Singing Although the picture does give me greater opportunity to act ; (you notice I said greater oppor-1 tunity), I want it understood I have no intention of abandoning i my singing career to concentrate on straight drama. I mention this because the rumors have already started. Personally, I think peo ple should stick to whatever they dobest and for me that's making with the vocal chords. I believe the "story is the most important ingredient in a movie. I like musicals but few of them have really good stories. That's why I enjoyed making "Love Me or Leave Me." It had an excel lent story. That's what I'm look ing for these days and that's the reason you may be seeing me in more films like that. by smoke before firemen extin guished the blaze. Singer Mickey Mario and the hotel orchestra continued the show until all the guests had been evacuated. "They kept the show going un til the flames were visible through an opening in the ceiling,"- a hotel official said. Fire department officials esti mated damage at $300,000. .How ever, the owner of the hotel, Beldon Katleman, said smoke and water damage may push the figure to as high as $1,000,000. The golfer doesn't detail what she has "heard" about the effects of "too much salt." Maybe some thing not suitable for children. We should remember that a normal, healthy adult excretes (in urine and sweat) up to half an ounce of salt a day. Plenty of trouble may occur from fail ure to take enough salt on one way or another say freely salted foods. Seldom if ever does Doctor Convicted Of Murdering Wife . McCalester, Okla. (U.R) Dr. Ben T. Galbraith, 34-year-old heart specialist convicted of murdering his wife, today await ed a judge's formal sentence that will send him to a life term in prison. The slightly-built young phys ician will be taken from his jail cell before Judge W. A. Lackey tomorrow to hear the sentence as recommended by an all-male jury. The jury, which could have handed down the death penalty, deliberated only an hour and 10 minutes Saturday ' night before finding Galbraith guilty of kill ing his wife, Katherine, 34. The verdict climaxed a week long trial, presaged by Dr. Gal braith's slashing his wrist a day before it started. It was his fourth attempt at suicide since last March 17, when his wife was clubbed to death and his three children died from injec tions of poison. Gailbraith admitted killing his family and trying to burn their house down to cover up the crime. He said we killed them be cause of a fear he was going crazy and his family would be left to starve. Scientific observation has shown that a considerable amount of vitamin Bl is lost when sweating is excessive, and so any one who sweats a good deal, whether from heat alone or from vigorous work or play, should take an extra ration of Bl (thiamin) in one form or another each day. The judicious use of table salt with drinking water or what ever beverage one takes for re freshment is noticeably more refreshing than is water or other beverage without the extra salt.
