'mm l-3 HOW'S YOUR BOOSTER PUMP WORKING? It is beyond my comprehen sion what makes an automobile run at the touch of a button or the flick of a switch, and so when I see a 14-year-old boy take a fine automobile apart, strew the pieces around the floor, monkey with various parts for a day or two and then put 'em all to gether again, making the car run better than before, I'm flabber gasted. Speaking of pumps, I learned that there's one in an automobile when the thing froze one lovely autumn night in Flagstaff, and when we started the car in the morning some pins or something were sheared off. Had to stop every few miles all day to let the engine cool or refill the radi ator. A fellow who purported to know I hope he wasn't spoof ing told me that the answer to a question that has always baffled me and still does, namely, how either the water supply or the sewage of a large city can be carried to and from the highest and the lowest levels, with such efficiency the answer, said the man, is simple: Wherever it is necessary booster pumps keep water or sewage moving. When the diaphragm contracts (tarpaulin squeezes down upon the abdomen) it increases pres sure in the abdomen at the same time it decreases pressure in the thorax. So when air is drawn into the thorax (lungs) blood in the great vein (vena cava) and the vast network of small veins (splanchnic pool) is pumped to ward the heart (right auricle). I When the diaphragm relaxes (rests) and air leaves the thorax (lungs) in expiration the booster effect on circulation is not lost from backflow of blood in the great veins, because the veins are equipped with valves which pre vent backflow. That's the aspiratory action of the thorax, and the reason why everybody should practice reg ularly night and morning, not "deep breathing" but the Belly Breathing exercise, as it is de scribed in the pamphlet Belly Breathing, available on request if you ask for it in writing (clip ping will not suffice) and pro vide a stamped envelope bearing your address. I don't mind if you call me stinker, quack or so-and-so, but you can't patronize or snub me and still command my service. Persons with poor circulation or any kind of heart, artery or blood pressure trouble can get great benefit from the booster pump if they know how to make it work efficiently. Answer That she consult a phy- Deschutes Park Meeting Topic Portland (U.R) A group from The Dalles was to meet with the State Highway Commission to day to discuss its plans for a state park at the mouth of the Deschutes river, one of two such projects discussed at the com mission's meeting yesterday. The commission authorized purchase of about 150 acres of land bordering the Deschutes just south of the new highway and railroad bridges but made no committment on develop ment plans. The commission, looking for ward to a park near Rooster Rock, 25 miles east of Portland, decided to widen the Columbia river highway there to four lanes before going ahead with construction of an overpass into park properties. County Judge Ward Weber headed the delegation from The Dalles which was expected to present plans for park areas on both sides of the Deschutes.. The commission authorized construction of a building at Depoe Bay to be something like the structure at Crown Point, a concession-restroom- observatory type. It would cost between $50, 000 and $50,000 with rentals re paying the cost. The commission rejected a re quest by Girl Scout officials for a $2500 pedestrian walkway on Eagle creek bridge on the Clackamas secondary highway near Estacada. Umatilla Pea Crop About Half of Normal Pendleton (U.R) Umatilla county's pea crop this year is only about half of normal, prin cipally because of unfavorable weather, a local canner has re ported. ' In 1953, considered a normal crop year, the pea crop was valued at $3,750,000. Lack of rainfall during the first 15 days in June when a normal amount of one-half inch falls and extreme heat during the moisture out of the soil. The canner called it the poorest crop in 20 years.
