Extensive practice sessions were held by each 24-man squad this week for the game next Saturday night in Multnomah stadium in Portland. The state team is practicing at the University of Portland and the Metro politan team, composed of outstanding seniors from Portland and vicinity high schools,-is working out at Lewis and Clark college. The State team has won the last four all-star games, and has won five to Metro's two since the contest was organized for the benefit of Shriner's hospital for cripoled children. Four Games Remain For Cheney Nine Four scheduled games remain for the Medford Cheney Studs this season upon 'completion of this week end's two-game South ern Oregon league series at Bend. Business Manager Bill Ask with said the Studs have no games scheduled for mid-week nights,, and after next week end's two-game league series with Coquille here, only two non-league games remain. Medford plays two games at Coos Bay-North Bend Aug. 27 and 28, while other SOL teams see league action to wind up the loop schedule. Besides the Medford-Coquille games here next week end. Bend plays at Drain and Bandon plays at Rcscburg. The last week end cf play finds Grants Pass at Co- qille. Drain at Bandon and Rose' burg at Bend. Tabori Wins Three-Mile London (U.R) Laszlo Ta bori, Hungary's untiring 24- year-old soldier, won a distance running event for the second straight day Saturday when he beat world record holder Chris Chataway of England in a three mile race in a slow 13:44.6 clocking. A wind-swept drizzle which made the track muddy, and the withdrawal of Tabori's star countryman. Sandor Iharos, kept the time 21.4 seconds slow er than the new three-mile stan dard of 13:23.2 set by Chataway Aug. 3. Tabori's three - mile victory and his 4:05.0 triumph in the one-mile race Friday helped Hungary defeat Britain, II6V2 points to 93 V4; in their two-day International Track and Field meet at White City Stadium. Britain won the women's comp etition, however, 60 to 53. Tabori, one of the world's five runners to have raced the mile in less than four minutes, turned on a powerful spurt down the backstretch of the final quarter-mile lap and caught Chataway about 30 yards from the finish. They ran shoulder to shoulder for several yards be fore the Hungarian squeezed ahead to win by two yards. Chataway also was timed in 13:44.6. Tin cans are actually about 99 per cent steel. Williams Shrugs Off 2,000th Hit New York 'CU.R) Ted Wil liams, instead of celebrating the 2,000th hit of his major league career, shrugged it off instead today and said he was "sorry it had to be such a lousy one." The hit that enabled Williams to reach the milestone was a bloop single that dropped in centerfield during the first in ning of Thursday's game be tween the Red Sox and Yankees. It was hit off Bob Turley. "I was lnkoogilGeo5.. boped "I was looking forward to get ting it but I was hoping that number 2,000 would be a lot better one that that," added the curly-haired 36-year old Boston slugger. "The double I got off the fifth inning was a lot more like it," he said. "I hit that ball a lot better." Williams' 2001st hit was a sol id smash that bounced into the right field stands for a ground rule double but the hit before that put him in a class with Stan Musial of the Cardinals, Enos Slaughter of the Athletics and Mickey Vernon of the Senators as . the only men active in the majors who have made 2,000 or more hits. Portland Signs For Multnomah Portland (U.R) Multno mah stadium will be the home of the Portland Beavers for the next 20 years under terms of a document signed Friday by Port land Baseball Club, Inc., Mult nomah Civic Stadium associa tion and Multnomah Athletic Club officials. Signing climaxed months of negotiations. Under terms of the lease, the ball club will pay the stadium group 535,000 a year rental or ten per cent of the gross receipts. Renovations of the stadium to accomodate baseball will be completed in time for the 1956 season. The new agreement is to take effect Jan. 1, 1956. Clay Brown, president of the ball club, said he thought the switch from the ancient Vaughn street ball park to the stadium was a "great move" for the Bea vers. The 30,000 seats in the stad ium will give the Beavers one of the best parks in the PCL, Brown said. The old Vaughn street loca tion was sold to the California Bag and Metal company recent ly as development as an in dustrial site. Moore Works oh Secret Punches North Adams, Mass. (U.R) Cheerful Norman, trainer of heavyweight challenger Archie Moore, said today that Moore's surprise secret workout on his "day off" Thursday was a "schooling session." , "Archie wanted to try out certain punches and a number of defensive moves, which he i didn't want anyone to see," said Norman. "We plan to do this about once a week." Grossinger, N. Y. (U.R) Use Mail Tribune Want Ads Bowling Leagues Plan to Organize Organizational meetings for winter season bowling leagues will be held at the Medford Bowling lanes next week. About five openings remain in Friday night's Industrial league, and about two openings are available in the Evergreen league, which will bowl Wed nesday nights. Planned are six men's leagues of five-man teams each, ' and three women's leagues with five member teams. There also will be three-member squads for both men and women, in addition to a Sunday mixed league, which will organize after Labor day. The winter season will start Aug. 22 at the Bowling lanes. Heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano, asked todcomment or? a statement by challenger Archie Moore that "Rocky has lost his punch," snapped back, "Moore talks too much." "Moore is having himself some fun, I guess, ' shooting off his mouth that I have lost my punch," said Marciano at his training camp here. "I hope some one asks him that same question the day after our fight."
