MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Democratic Governors Pressim enson To Reveal Presidental Plans Chicago IU.RJ Democratic governors attending the 47th an mml governors' conference trekked back and forth between Aclai E. Stevenson's suburban hrne today and many put pres sure on him to reveal whether he will run again for the presi dency. Jn the forefront of the gover nors who sat down with Steven son was Averill Harriman of Kw York, Stevenson's close personal friend and the man most widely named as his possi ble opponent at the Democratic National Convention next sum- Harriman went to Stevenson's Libertyville, 111., farm home on Tuesday night for dinner and a "good long talk." The two Democrats declined to say whether they talked about the presidency. But Harriman re peated his support for Stevenson in 1956 and said discussion of whether he will run himself is "too iffy" to talk about. The political sideshow all but overshadowed the main work of the governors' conference, which got down to business today with a discussion of highway safety, road building,' and Congress' failure to pass President Eisen hower's highway construction program. Gov. John F. Sims of New Mexico said "I told Stevenson rather plainly" to make a state ment. Abraham Ribicoff of Con necticut also talked to Steven son after telling newsmen that the party's titular leader should get off the fence. Dennis J. Roberts of Rhode Island returned from Liberty ville saying he felt convinced that Stevenson would run. New Jersey's Robert B. Meyner said he also thought Stevenson should speak out. Meanwhile, Stevenson's di vorced wife commented tartly that her husband is a "Hamlet" who "can't make up his mind" about the presidency. Mrs. Ellen Borden Stevenson, who won a divorce while her husband was governor, told newsmen "He loves to be dra matic, you know." She called Stevenson "inde cisive" and said "that's why I don't think he'd make a good president he says he's deter mined to do one thing one day and another thing the next." Harriman was one of the few Democratic governors who re fused to put any public pressure on Stevenson. Nevertheless, the New York governor refused to be pinned down to a flat statment that he would never be a candidate. Meanwhile, most the the 20 Republican governors attending the conference felt President Eisenhower would run for the presidency again, a view also shared by the majority of the Democrats. DR.
