White City Tuesday, August 9, 1955 Pressure Lifted From Cobbler in TV Quiz Contest New York (U.P.) Bronx cobbler Gino Prato will decide tonight whether to keep $32,000 he has won on a television show or attempt to double it in his final appearance before the cam eras. The temptation to try for the biggest jackpot in radio-televis ion history was great because the opera-loving little shoemaker no longer was under pressure. Win or lose he no longer has to worry about his financial fu ture and a visit to his aged fath er in Italy already has been as sured. Those were the two big factors which might have per suaded 55-year-old Prato to think about keeping the money. Won Big Job But Prato announced Monday that his now-famous appearances on television's biggest giveaway program, "The $64,000 Ques tion," have won him a big-paying job and the promise of two free round-trip tickets to Italy. As an added bonus, the Metro politan Opera association has presented the smiling opera ex pert with season passes for two of the best seats in the house. Prato said he has been given a job paying "more than $10, 000" a year by the American Bilt Rite company, makers of the soles and heels he uses in his shoe repair shop. He will serve as the company's "good will ambassador" to the nation's shoe industry and cobblers. Will Travel Country ' Prato will travel around the country two weeks each month, speaking at shoe industry con ventions and having heart-to- heart talks with cobblers about their problems. Prato has con tinued to mend shoes in his little shop in the Bronx despite the big money he has won on his successive appearances the past few weeks. He refused to say whether he will enter the glassed-in booth tonight and try for what prom ises to be a tough question about opera, his chosen subject. But he did say he will go in alone, if he goes, rather than take along an expert as allowed by the rules for the top question. . Win or lose, Prato is going to Italy the end of this month to visit his 92-year-old father in Genoa. "I promised Daddy I'd be there one way or the other," he said. Artist Diego Rivera Treated for Cancer Mexico City (U.R) Diego Rivera, noted Mexican artist, disclosed Monday that he is being treated for cancer. Rivera, whose militant leftist politics have provoked almost as much controversy as his murals, said he is under treat ment by American and Mexican physicians and expects to enter a hospital within 10 to 15 days. "Yes, I have cancer," Rivera said in an interview. "Cancer is always serious and I'll prob ably die of it. But that's nothing to be in a bad humor about." He answered "of course," when asked if he could continue painting. Nicodemus Missed by Owners, Dog Friend Sheffield, Mass. (U.R) A boxer dog here misses his tough, tobacco-chewing pal, Nicodemus. Nicodemus was a bachelor all the days of his life, a wiry little bantam rooster who got fighting mad if any flouncing hen minced through his barnyard. Not that his owners, Dr. and Mrs. C. C. Reed, didn't try to make him fit into the conven tional pattern. They sneaked a hen into his lonely quarters, but Nicodemus . went on a hunger strike until she left. His only pal was a boxer dog named Charlie. They often car ried on madly at night, one bark ing, the other cfowing. Nicodemu liked children. He strutted and preened whenever they were around. He would also march in perfect time whenever a martial tune was played. He was a roisterer at the end, chewing his tobacco and strut ting even when the effort made his feathers shake. The doctor pumped him full of anti-biotics but it wasn't any good. Nico- I demus had all he wanted of life. MEDFORD (OREGOIf) MAIL TRTBUlTE IT 'Sick Leave' Given Brazilian Official Rio De Janeiro, Brazil (U.R) President Joao Cafe Jr. has granted "sick leave" to the chair man of the Brazilian joint chiefs of staff who hinted that the armed forces may intervene in the presidential campaign an authoritative source reported to day. ' Gen. Canrobert Pereira da Costa revived fears of a possible military coup before the October elections in a speech Friday at tacking political parties. He charged that partisan political strife has brought Brazil to the brink of "revolution and chaos and urged the armed forces to unite for possible "dramatic moments" during the next two months. Newspapers denounced the speech as "subversive and called on the government to re pudiate any suggestion of mili tary intervention. A high presidential source said that Pereira conferred with Cafe at the presidential palace Monday and requested and was granted a "sick leave. Cafe, thus far, has not com mented directly on . Pereira s speech. However, in an inter view published Monday, Caie made it plain that he wanted no part in any "dictatorial govern ment.
