Just An Idea The handicapping system of bringing competitors closer to gether is used successfully in many sports. Why not in base ball? The current National League race is a sorry affair from the spectators' standpoint. Taking the present standings in the National League, how would you handicap the clubs for the 1956 season? The Dodgers, of course, would start from scratch. Both Milwaukee and the Giants should be handicapped at six. That is, they would get six games in the winning column to start the season with. Draft Adviser Gets Suspended Sentence Brattleboro, Vt. (U.R) Mrs. Lucille Miller, 44-year-old moth er convicted of advising youths to dpdge the draft, was given a suspended two-year penitentiary sentence in U. S. District Court yesterday. Mrs. Miller was convicted on two indictments of nine counts each. Judge Ernest W. Gibson sen tenced her to a year and a day and placed her on probation for five years on each indictment. Her husband, Manuel, convicted of obstructing U. S. Marshals, was sentenced to one year and a day in the penitentiary and fined $1,000. The couple planned to appeal to the U. S. Supreme Court. Cuba comprises the sixth most important center for America's export trade. By DORE SCHARY Written for the United Press ' Hollywood M.P.i There are two recurrent rumors about Hollywood films in connection with the international market that I should like to consider. One of them is the criticism that we give a distorted picture of America. TTsQPntiallv T Hplipvp this in bp . . . . 1 m-.w . w - - a snobbish attitude on the part of some of the critics who say this. European audiences are quite so phisticated and have the power of selection, and understanding on which we pride ourselves. They are quite able to be discrim inating, and if they see a lush' technicolor musical comedy in which the leading lady has a bathtub 20 feet wide, they take for granted that these bathtubs do not exist in all American homes. Film Diplomacy They can see a picture in which mayhem and murder are committed on a public street without assuming that this is a casual, daily happening on all streets in America. We Americans can look at an Italian picture like "Bicycle Thief" and accept it as a search' ing piece of work, without com' ing to the conclusion that all Italians steal bicycles. Why do we not assume that Italian aud iences are capable of the same reasoning with which we are blessed? ine iruin is mat in surveys made by the State Department our films have consistently pro ven to be a wonderful ambas sador for the American way of life. Russ Would Edit Recently we have begun to be criticized for certain pictures which were sent overseas be cause they depict some seamy sides of America. We have made surveys overseas and we find these pictures actually reflect very well upon us because audi ences seeing them realize that if America can prodce pictures of self-criticism, we are living in a healthy political atmosphere. These pictures have answered some European fears about the violence imposed by McCarthy- lsm. The charge is made that if the Russians could get their hands on one of these pictures they could use it for propaganda pur poses by changing a few words here and there. The answer is that, if the Rus sians got hold of any American film they could change a word here and there and turn it into active propaganda. They could take another picture and say it is a common daily truth. No one picture can be pro tected against the professional liar. He made the statement in re ply to questions at a gala 5 2 hour party at his summer estate for the Moscow diplomatic corps the first such frolic ever given in the 37-year history of Com munist Russia., His expression of hope was considered surprising and sig nificant since Soviet leaders have usually parried such ques tions with the protocol reply that visits depended first of all on invitations.
