Match Race Where did the greatest match race in the history of the Amer ican turf take place? It was in Brooklyn. That was in 1894 when Domino and Henry of Navarre met at the Gravesend track in the beautiful borough across the bridge. The race end ed in a dead heat. In old Ken tucky, near Lexington, can be seen the last resting place of the great Domino with an inscrip tion on the tombstone that reads: Here lies the fleetest runner the American turf has ever known and one of the gamest and most generous of horses." Q Much interested in your stating that the real name of the beau tiful actress, Lillian Lorraine, was Mary Ann Brennan. Have there been many celebrities named Brennan? A. Well, there is Walter" Brennan, the dis tinguished thespian. And Ed ward Brennan, race track man agement genius, now general manager of Monmouth Park. Then there was Bill Brennan, the heavyweight who gave Jack Dempsey such a busy evening at the old Madison Square Garden when the Manassa Mauler was in his prime. Any way, the women really pay for straying from the straight and narrow in some European coun tries. In Italy a woman proven guilty of having an affair with a man married to somebody else can be jailed for three years. In Malta the penalty for the same offense is one year. In Switzer land it is also one year. In France it is two years. Briefly The buyer of an automobile in New Zealand is required by law to make a 50 per cent down payment . . . Phone 3-3934 Izaak Walton League's View On Water Resources Given City, agriculture industry and recreation are recognized by the Izaak Walton league of America as being the most important users of water, according to pol icies of the orgainzation as out lined last week by Col. Paul H. Weiland of the Jackson county chapter. Weiland said Waltonians be lieve non-consumption -recrea tional uses of water are suf ficiently important to be recog nized by law. Recreation, he pointed out, is a primary use in many places in the country. Preservation is Aim Waltonians believe preserva tion,, rather than conservation, should be sufficient to maintain scenic uses of water in a nat ural state. Weiland said "It is unthinkable that present genera tions should be permitted to con vert the nation's waterfalls, rapids and gorges into pools be hind dams." Management of water includes flood control, irrigation, navi gation and hydro-electric pow er, he said, and Waltonians be lieve flood control polices should be recognized in four steps. ' They are: 1: contouring, ter racing, strip cropping and main tenance of good vegative covers; 2. construction of small ponds, gully control structures and highway fill dams; 3. larger Plumbing Co. Sold; Name Is Changed Purchase of the H. E. Hawk Plumbing company was announc ed Saturday by three men who have joined to form Stuart Mech anical Inc., plumbing and heat ing. Personnel of the new company will continue to be those em ployed by the former Hawk and Kenyon firms, except for H. E. Hawk, who sold his interest in the firm. Kenyon said Saturday that the same services will be continued, and that the tele phone number will be the one listed for . the Hawk company. Increased Apprentice Program Is Opened Washington, D. C. In an ticipation of an increase of 33 13 per cent in the building industry during the next 15 years, the Associated General Contractors of America has launched a program to increase the number of apprentices em ployed by its members. The U. S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Apprentice ship is cooperating in this effort. AGC officers have expressed the opinion that a stepped-up ap prenticeship program is basic to the continued progress and prosperity of the construction industry. The AGC decision to expand organizational effort on training was prompted by a gov ernment prediction of a popula tion of 200,000,000 by 1970. Details on the local applica tion of the stepped up program may be obtained at Room 301, U. S. Post Office building, Med ford, according to Myron D. Johnston, apprenticeship repre sentative for the Bureau of Ap prenticeship. Mite Inspection on Peach Trees Advised County Horticultural Agent Don Berry suggested to peach orchardists this week end that they check trees for late build ups of two-spotted mites. When infestations get severe, Berry said, trees are devitalized, and in extreme cases, lose some of their foliage. Berry recom mended spraying with IVi pounds of armite per 100 gal lons of water, or, in speed spray ers, six pounds of armaite per 100 gallons of water. Portlander Indicted On Charge of Assault Portland (U.R) Leland Cram er, 34, of Portland, was indicted by the Multnomah county grand jury on an armed assault charge for an attack on a police officer. Cramer is accused of severely beating patrolman Raymond A; Roadnight July 23, when the of ficer was called to the Cramer home to investigate a reported disturbance. structures to retain surplus wat er near headwaters; and 4. main stream dams to control water unable, to Te controlled in either of the first three steps. Least Damage The league believes that" when ponds are necessary or desirable dams should be constructed in stream valley areas where the least possible damage to re sources result. The league supports reuse of water, which should be treated after use to leave it as unim paired as possible. Water for irrigation is nec essary and desirable, the league believes, but water should not be taken from streams to the extent that flow is reduced and cannot support desirable aquatic life. The organization believes, Weiland said, that land should "not be irrigated which cannot financially support irrigation. The league opposes construction and operation of unnecessary or undesirable irrigation projects. Locks and Dams ' Weiland said the league op poses construction of lock and dam systems for navigation in conjunction with power facili ties, which would result in mea surable damage to food or rec reational resources. With the ex ception of the Great Lakes, the Ohio and lower Mississippi riv ers, commerical transportation on inland waterways would not be economically feasible with out locks and dams, Weiland said. ' He pointed out the league fav ers water management for power when it does not impair or destroy other values, when it is economically sound and if there is feasible alternative source for power. He sai dthe league takes into consideration the effect of pro prosed hydro-electric power de velopments . before the group determines it should take in re gard to the individual develop ment. The league opposes over-development of water sourcses and resources, and Weiland pointed out that both ground and sur face water have been over-exploited in many localities. THE EXCITING 1955 CHEVROLET FEATURAMA! COME SEE THE 1955 CHEVROLET FEATURAMA MONDAY - AUGUST 8 (CaDWffiTTIEW (CfflffivmaDiLiETr August Sky Review By J. HUGH PRUETT Astronomer. Extension Division Oregon Higher Education System The days are definitely get ting shorter, yet summer is still with us. The sky is quite devoid of the ordinary array of planets. Mercury, Venus, Mars and Ju piter have temporarily gone into hiding as they are now so near the sun that it is practically im possible to see them. Only Saturn remains in the open. By the time the sky is dark this yellow, non-twinkling object ap pears as a bright star only fairly well up in the southwest. For the study of the brighter stars let us observe about an hour after sunset. Low in the south, red Antares is flashing as the heart of the celestial Scorpion. This star and its con stellation were discussed in this column last week. Somewhat east of Antares a sort of double dipper joined at the handles marks Sagittarius, the Archer. Some call this the Teapot. Glitters Near Horixon. West of southwest, blue-white Spica glitters fairly near the horizon. Spica is the principal star in the constellation Virgo, Portland Firm Gels $250,000 Contract Portland (U.R) General Con struction Company of Portland has been awarded a $250. ,000 contract by the Corps of Eng ineers for approximately 1,000, 000 cubic feet of maintenance dredging in the Columbia river between the Longview bridge and Skamokawa, Wash. It's great fun for children they'll love a ride in the Chevrolet Kiddie Convertible. MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE KINS the Virgin. High up in the west-southwest, orange Arcturus is brilliant. This star is at the base of a kite shaped figure made up of rather dim stars. To the left of the top of this kite, a small half circle of dim stars outlines Corona Borealis, the Northers Crown. High in the northwest, notice the familiar Big Dipper, the brighter stars of the Big Bear, as it slides down toward the northern horizon. The Dipper constitutes the hips and tail of the bear. Fainter stars lower down outline the rest of the creature. Marks Head of Cross Turning to the eastern half of the sky, we find blue-white Vega in the Harp only slightly east of the zenith, the point di rectly overhead. Somewhat low er and more northerly, Deneb marks the head of the Northern Cross. This cross, easily outlined, is now lying on its side with the foot extending toward the south. High in the southeast, Altair in the Eagle is bright. Notethe two dimmer guard stars, on on each side of Altair. Somewhat to the left of these, a diamond shaped figure of four small stars marks Delphinus, the Dolphin. August is the time for the Perseid meteors. Some may be seen early in the month, but the best display comes between the 10th and 14th. The largest counts can be obtained during tr hour or two before dawn, yet many may be seen in the late evening. At their best 60 or 70 may be counted in an hour by an ob server with normal vision if he is seated in a dark place and keeps his eyes constantly on the sky. There will be no moonlight interference in the evening sky during the time of maximum. A half moon will illuminate the morning sky Aug. 10, but it will be constantly smaller after that date.
