o o o Oo o SCIENCE AT WORK By DELOS SMITH United Press Sciene leStcr New York OI.P.) By using the herb, lupinus albus, as a guii pig, Dr. David I. Macht has been able to show that the blood of human beings who are psychotic or who have cancer or any one of several skin diseases, including leprosy, contains poi sonous substances" not found in the blood of normal and healthy individuals. It is not for this writer to say what that means, if anything. But it dramatizes the fact that no biological fluid is any more complex chemically than is blood Sjnd few if any offer such possi bilities for momentous discover ies. The subject here is Dr. Macht and how he decided, 33 years ago, to use vegetable life J6 look into animal life. Starting out in laboratories of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, he got the idea that jiince vegetable life was much ijnore sensitive to chemical com 'pounds than were forms of ani mal life, then why not work out a way of testing the toxicity of drugs in vegetables rather than in animals? After experimenta tion, white lupine lupinus al bus proved to be just the vege table. Tests With Blood He learned to grow it in labor atory solutions of various nu trients, so that the rate of growth or by what degree it slowed growth. Laboratory animals, such as guinea pigs, gave vary ing results for the same com pounds but white lupine didn't. Having tested many drugs over the years, Dr, Macht turn ed to blood. It was demonstrated at once that blood, no matter its origin, was somewhat toxic to white lupine. The next discovery was that blood from persons with pernicious anemia but not the blood of persons with any In and Around Jacksonville Jacksonville Mrs. H. E. Grif fith, Auburn, Calif., was a house guest several days this week at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Noble and plans to return to see the Jacksonville Jubilee. She is also visiting her brother and family, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Hul bert, Medford, who have as their guest another brother, Frank Hulbert, also of Auburn. Mr. and Mrs. V. L. Palmer, Dunsmuir, Calif., were visitors last week end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Curl. Mrs Palmer is Curl's sister. Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Smith and son Gregg, San Francisco were visiting last week at the home of Smith's mother, Mrs G. N. Smith. They were accom panied by Mrs. Robert Smith's parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. Tro jan, Portland. He then found that this was true of persons who had leprosy or pemphigus but no other skin disease Next he turned to mental pa tients and in 12 years he tested blood samples from 1,400 of them. These studies showed that the blood of all the psychotics. whether the psychosis was classi fied as "functional" or "organic, followed a typical pattern in poisoning white lupine. The de gree of toxicity, it seemed to him, depended on how severe the psychosis was, not on whether it was melancholia, to Ashland last Friday. Miss .Connie Sokolowski, daughter of Mrs. Sokolowski, spent last week visiting her grandmother, Mrs. George Mar- cisz, Barnett rd., Medford The Lee Hardy home in Jack sonville was headquarters this week for a family reunion of the Hardy family. Getting together for a visit were Hardy's two brothers and their families, Mr. and Mrs. W. E. Hardy and two daughters, Jeanie and Sharon, Hawthorne, Calif., and Mr. and Mrs. D. D. Hardy of Lon Beach; two sisters, Mrs. Ann Beauchamp. Hawthorne, and mania, depression, schizophrenia Mr. and Mrs. John Koepernick, Others there or paresis. Cancer Results He then began working with the blood of cancer patients. It seemed to affect lupine no differ ently than the blood of healthy persons. He 'vernalized tne seeds that is, delayed their ger mination by subjecting them to cold, which results in premature leaving and flowering and to these seeds, even one per cent solutions of blood from cancer patients were startlingly and uniformly poisonous. were Mr. andl Mrs. Marion Hardy, son of the Lee Hardys from Grants Pass, and another son and wife, also of Grants Pass, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hardy and a daughter and her family, Mr." and Mrs. Harlan Rolie of Jacksonville; another brother of Lee Hardy residing in Jacksonville, Mr. and Mrs. A. Hardy and" family, at whose home some of the out-of-town guests stayed. Mr. and Mrs. Loyal Smith, OAs 50S i5E ELSE Q rir Marht whn nnu, ronHi.pt son of Mr, and Mrs. Clinton A v.5. rarrh in th. Thsrmacolo- Smith, Jacksonville, recently gic laboratory of Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, described his work at a recent meeting of the Ameri can Society of Plant Psysiolo- gists. The practical applications of his studies to human suffering, he foresaw as follows: In cancer, it may lead to quick way of confirming the presence of very early cancer, when it is suspected but can't be demonstrated. In psychoses, it may lead to fundamental new knowledge. He is now demonstrating that reser- pine, the isolated active chemi cal compound of the India herb, rauwolfia serpentina, seems to neutralize whatever it is in psy chotic blood that poisons lupine. And reserpine now is in wide spread use in mental hospitals married, now reside at 811 West 13th st., Medford. Mrs. H. W. Edwards has as summer guests her three grand daughters, Phyliss-Jean and Car olyn Milligan and Caren Brown all of Compton, Calif. Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Rasmus- sen, Jacksonville, have recently sold their home at 104 South Third st., and now reside in the Oak Grove district at 185 Clover lane. They sold their home to Mr. and Mrs. Harvey R. Parrott, Medford. The Parrotts have two children who will attend Jack sonville school, a son, Richard Dean, who will be in the third grade, and his sister Claudia Edette, first grade this year. Par rott is employed as an installer and repairman for Bell Tele and Mrs. Raymond Schmidling, Portland, and a cousin, Mrs. De Roborn Owens and her daughter, Mrs. L. K. Hatch, Rogue River. Schmidling came to Jacksonville to visit the graves of his .mother. Frances Sales, and a sister. Clara Schmidling, in the Jack sonville cemetery. After much inquiry of several older resi dents here, Schmidling was able to locate and visit the old Hoef home in which he was born Aug. 4, 1900. Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Min shall and family, who now oc cupy the house on 608 Sterling rd., showed the Schmidlings through the house and let them take pictures. The house has been remodeled and almost com pletely changed in appearance, but part of the original struc ture still could be recognized. They found many older resi dents who remembered the fam ily when they lived in this home. Schmidling also stated that his father, Augustine Schmidling, was Jacksonville's village black smoth. and according to his son was also the original heir to the famous historic U.S. Hotel which he later lost in a lawsuit, at which time the famous "Madam Holt," prominent personality in Jacksonville's early history, be came proprietor. Some years back Schmidling said he donated to.the Portland Historical society a mirror that hung on the walls at the U. S. Hotel at the time when President Hays made his trio through Jacksonville. He also gave a record of the lawsuit and a handmade wagon made by his father in his blacksmith days Schmidling, who retired last week after being a postman for 35 years in Portland, said that he had enjoyed this day in Jack' sonville more than any day he had spent for years.
