Whether the

Aline Mosby singer and the
rubber-faced comedian will "di
vorce" nearly has pushed the
eternal question of Debbie and
Eddie out of Hollywood conver
sation. Dean and Jerry's long-smoul
dering differences erupted three
months ago when Jerry went to
New Jersey for a premiere of
their latest picture and Dean
stayed home. At the time Martin
insisted, "we will work together
next fall because we have con
tracts." But after Jerry returned to
Hollywood the two separately
approached Paramount and
NBC, through lawyers and
agents, to try to get out of the
contracts. The employers are try
ing to reconcile the team, friends
say, "and it's a matter of deli
cate negotiations with everybody
making different offers and

counter-offers. Right now Dean
and Jerry both want to break
up."
The boys are not clue to work
together until their first TV
show in September. But their as
sociates feel "this quarrel will
be settled one way or another
within the next 10 days.
"I think they're still torching
for each other and may fall back
into each other's arms any min
ute," one associate of the team
said. "It's like a marriage. A
couple tries separation, and
winds up back together."
Hollywood experts at first
chorused Martin and Lewis were
great as a team but divided
would fall. However, since their
separation both have been press
ed with offers for single per
formances.
Major film studios have show
ered Jerry with comedy roles.
Dean has been asked to star
alone in musicals. Both have re
ceived lucrative offers from TV
and Broadway shows.
"Those offers may really drive
them apart," the associate adds.
"Each is tempted to prove to the
world, himself and the other
that he has the talent to stand
on his own."
One Paramount ' source said
the studio insists the boys work
together, or they'll have to buy
back their contract. Other
sources said the studio was try
ing to work out a new contract
that would allow the team to
take outside jobs as singles.
Their Paramount contract was
one of the most lucrative in show

happened to a fellow who pass
ed his civil service examinations
with a very high mark. He wants
to know if it is possible to have
height increased three quarters
of an inch. That I cannot an
swer ' definitely. However. I
have heard that members of a
crew of a San Francisco fireboat
had a method of increasing
height as much as one inch. And
often did it to help some fellow

Buffalo Herd Hoped
For Alaskan Island
Astoria (U.R) Four buffalo,
including a two-ton bull, are en
route to a tiny Alaskan island
along with 70 head of cattle
where a big-game hunter hopes
to build his own wild bison herd
for hunting purposes.
The unusual cargo was car
ried aboard the converted mine
sweeper, "Dragon," which sailed
from Astoria late yesterday. It
is destined for tiny Popoff
Island, the domain of big-game
hunter and guide Harold Nick
les. Nickles said he intends to let
the buffalo run wild on the
island in the hope that they will
multiply and furnish sport for
himself and other hunters and
guides. Nickles owns Popoff
Island, which has a population
of 75, mostly fishermen. The
cattle will be raised for beef.
