An instance in which I had in
side information: The professor
of medicine in a medical school
gave an associate on the faculty
as a Christmas present a new
car of expensive make. When
the recipient received the gift,

ification of milk for infant feed

boy on Chapel Street in Can
andaigua with patches on my
pants not that I minded wear
ing patches, but mother was a
poet of sorts and my patches
were round, oval, crescent or
heart shaped whereas square or
oblonff patches were in fashion.
About two grains of citrate
were added to each ounce of
milk used to prepare the feed
ing formula. This fairly indi
cates that sodium citrate is as
dangerous as orange juice.
Besides its use in infant feed
ing, sodium citrate still is used
in the same wapr two grains in
each ounce of milk to keep the
milk liquid in the stomach, in
peptic ulcer cases..
Sodium citrate is used in what
is known as the citrate method
of transfusion of blood to pre
vent clotting enough of it is
added to the receiving vessel to
make a solution of approximate
ly the strength of the milk solu
tion for infant feeding. It has
various other medical uses, de
tails of which are beyond the
scope of a health column. Suffice
to say that citrate of soda is a
milky akaline diuretic (pro
motes excretion of urine), dia
phoretic (promotes excreteion of
sweat) and expectorant (pro
motes secretion from mucous
membranes lining air passages
and facilitates expulsion of such
secretions from the bronchial
tubes and chest). 'o
So, for at least 25 years fol
lowers of this independent o(to
put it mildly) column have been
using with a good deal of satis
faction the homemade foolproof
cough remedy described in Lit
