Personal Health Service By WILLIAM BRADY, M.D. Readers should address inquiries to: Dr. William Brad? 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. MINIMUM PHYSICAL ACTIVITY According to a newspaper story published June 6, 1953, (some 40 readers sent me clip pings), a Minnesota woman cele brated her 88th birthday by walking l- miles to and from her favorite restaurant for breakfast in the morning and again for her dinner in the early evening, as she has been doing for many years. She advised peo ple who want to stay healthy and in high spirits to roll a few somersaults every day, as she has been doing since her 53rd birthday. She began rolling 'em on the advice of one Dr. Brady, OI' Doc Brady, that is. who, it seems, was urging people to roll somersaults sway back when . . . Then from Montreal comes a clipping of a story about an 84-year-old acrobat who died of a broken neck sustained while performing a somersault in a pa rochial entertainment. Just what they call somersault in Montreal I don't know. Ac cording to this story a profes sional strong man cupped his hands and flipped his elderly friend in the air, but the coura geous old gentleman failed to complete the turn and landed on his head and shoulder. He re fused to be taken to a doctor, complaining only of "stiff neck" . . . but he died a few days later of broken neck. Yahbut the accidents to which tumblers, acrobats or profession al gymnasts are subject interest surgeons, osteopaths and insur ance adjustors, maybe, not us rollers. At last survey the Min nesota woman was in fine fettle; my most admirable playmate, 85, who rolled one on the bowl ing green recently just to show us how, is still the hardest man to beat; and the gaffer who writes most of the pieces in this column counts the day lost when he can't do a half-dozen forward rolls. Although I maintain that any one who is not crippled or de crepit should roll six somer saults (forward rolls) on the floor first thing every morning, I do not advise one who is crip pled or decrepit to do so. If you try it, you do so at your own peril. On written request accompan ied with a stamped, self-addressed envelope I'll send you a pamphlet telling how and why every able-bodied person should do a few rolls every day the pamphlet on Somersaults. In close 25c in addition if you want also Little Lesson 16, The 7 Keys to Vite. One of the seven keys is an adequate amount of exercise. Not that a half dozen or dozen forward rolls each day would be anywhere nearly equivalent to a brisk walk of TV Programs KBES (Channel 5) FRIDAY 3 50 Devotlone 4 00 Feminine Fanclea 4:30 Val Rogue Camera 5 00 Aunt Polly's Birthday Party 5:30 Wild Bill Hickok 6 :00 Sports Reel 6:30 Hollvwood Album 7:00 Pappy Coleman 7:15 New York H20 7:45 Talent Time 8 00 Life of Riley 830 4-Star Playhoui 9 00 Undercurrent 9 -30 Luckv Sportstima 10:00 Weather 10-05 Best Theater 11:05 News 11:10 Sign Off SATURDAY 9:45 Pre-Game Dizzy Dean Show 9 55 Pro-Baseball 2:20 Devotions 3 00 Mr. Wizard 3 30 Dance Time 3 45 Better Bacon 4 00 Faith For Today 4:30 Western Theater 5:30 Soldier Parade 6 :00 Achievement in Steal 6 30 Melody Wranglers TOO America's Greatest Bands 8 00 Eddie Cantor 8 30 Arthur Murray Party 9 :00 Firestone Theater 9 30 Break the Bank 10:00 Wrestling From Hollywood 10:30 News 10:33 Sign Off SUNDAY 1 00 The Christophers 1 :30 Face the Nation 2 00 Jackson County Public Health 3:00 Sunday Matinee 3 30 This is the Life 4 00 Pablo Casals 4 30 So. CRITICISM WON'T CURE SELF-CONSCIOUSNESS The one thing a self-conscious person cannot accept without serious damage to his self-regard is criticism. "My daughter is 16 yean eld, quit pretty, intelligent, polite, and good at sports. I feel that she hat as much to of fer as most of the girls in her class at high school, if not more. But she has a dreadful inf er i o r i t y com plex and is yery self-con scious. I am always telling her how foolish she is lo feel as she does, that she is moiling her girlhood by this attitude, and that she cannot hope to have dates if she is so self-conscious that it embarrasses the boys to be with her. Even, when my friends are around, I have to tell her to come out and be sociable, not to let 'the cat get her tongue I have tried to help her, but she seems to be getting worse. Can you suggest anything for me to do?" (A) You have tried to help your daughter, but from what you say in your letter it appears that you have gone about it in the wrong way. You are respon- D. Hexlock her you sible for the increase in self-consciousness, though do not realize it. A self-conscious person is very sensitive to criticism. She feels more inadequate with each new criticism, and this adds to her self -consciousness. This, of course,, does not mean that you should not criticize your daugh ter when she does the wrong thing. However, your criticism should be positive and construc tive, not negative and destruc tive, as it has been. Do all you can to emphasize your daughter's good qualities to her, so she will focus attention on them. Never embarrass her by making fun of her self-consciousness in front of others. In stead, ignore it and suggest some thing for her to do so she will think of what she is doing in stead of herself. The more you can praise her in private, the sooner she will improve her atitude about her self. Avoid praise in front of others until you are sure she has enough self-confidence not to be embarrassed about it. (Copyright. 1955, General Features Corp.) two or three miles, but a few rolls, taking only seconds of time, are the best substitutes for exercise for the individual who will not walk, work or play. The movements from the Last Brady Symphony, described and illustrated in Little Lesson 16, take less than ten minutes to perform as a daily setting-up drill, starting and finishing the performance with a few rolls. This is the minimum physical activity required to maintain a modicum of vite, and vite means "preservation of the characteris tics of youth." QUESTIONS & ANSWERS No More Leg Cramps I used to suffer from severe leg cramps which came on at night . . . since I began supplementing my diet with a good daily ration of Ca & D, as you advise, no more cramps . . . T. D. Sehorn, manager of the Jackson county agricultural stabilization and conservation committee, said ballots must be returned no later than Aug. 19. Under the proposed agree ment, the government would de duct one cent per pound from subsidies on 1955 clippings. De ductions for the same purpose will be made in 1956, 1957, and 1958, but the exact deduction has not been determined. The deduction will not exceed one cent per pound, Sehorn said. Authorized in 1954 The marketing agreement was authorized by the National Wool act of 1954 which provides incen tive payments to wool growers to encourage increased domestic production of wool and mohair. If the agreement is approved, deductions also will be made on undipped lambs and yearlings moved to slaughter houses.
