Jungle Warfare School To Sharpen Fighting Prowess Of Soldiers in Australia Sydney (U.R) A new jungle warfare school set up in tropical Queensland will sharpen the fighting prowess of any Austra lian soldiers likely to be sent to Malaya. Athough Prime Minister Rob ert G. Menzie made no definite committments about Australian forces for Malaya, such a move is strongly tipped by authorita tive sources in Canberra. How ever, they point out it would have to wait until Menzie con fers with his Cabinet on his re turn from Washington and Otta wa late in March. Defense authorities feel that jungle training will be invalu able, whether Australian forces be required in Malaya or any other tropical battlefield. The army's jungle training center is located at Canungra, 48 miles southwest of Brisbane. Lt. Col. George Warfe, chief instruc tor at the center, conducts a rig id training designed to form a nucleus of tough, "jungle-wise" lighters. That includes how to cope with snakes, beetles, spiders, leeches, typhoid: how to be com fortable in steaming heat, roar ing rivers, torrential rains; how - to camouflage and how to es cape a jungle ambush. Fast Pace Warfe, popularly known as "Jungle George," recently re- montgomeryN 1 WARD 1 117 S. CENTRAL PHONE 2-6241 X vn in turned from four months in Ma laya. He admitted that Commun- j ist guerillas terrorizing the jungle there a re "astounding" fighters. But whether Australian troops would be used in this in ternal struggle or to help guard against external attack only, is a question that Warfe declined to answer. Regardless of the decision which would be a matter of high policy the army's training program at Canungra moves along at a back-breaking pace. "Sneaker courses" sections of thick jungle undergrowth are set with mechanical traps. Some of these even simulate an enemy, complete with guns, leaping from behind innocent looking trees. Soldiers who tra verse this course learn, to stalk the enemy stealthily, and to shoot first and fast when he attacks out of nowhere. Warfe is quick to emphasize that "the ambush in Malaya to day is one of the most danger ous and damaging forms of guer illa attack on the British. The Communists hide out in high spots overlooking a road, then, when a truck comes past, they soak it with machine-gun fire." New Ration Tested To familiarize Australians with this danger, Canungra has an "anti-ambush trainer," a gorge 500 feet high, with a stony washboard road running through the bottom. Day after day Australian troops w en d their way along the road, prac ticing Warfe's jungle - tried methods for escaping the am bush. One rule that Warfe stresses is that troops should never trav el in a completely tarpaulined truck. He says the sides should be left open so troops may escape from the opposite side to the ambush. A fiendish obstacle course apt ly titled "Hell's Pathway" is un der construction down on the banks of the Coomera river. There the soldiers pit themselves against water jumps, rope lad ders, barbed wire entanglements, low wire mazes, a "revetted bear pit," a "monkey walk" on hori zontal ladders, and "wobble boards." The men practice jump ing, complete with full pack, into the river from a 30-foot tower. Further preparation for jungle fighting conditions includes tests of a new ration-pack designed to last a fighting soldier for 24 hours. Australian scientists plan ned the food pack for feeding large groups particularly in trop ical country- Doctors also check fatigue, hunger, and energy tests in relation to the new food ration. Changing Name Some of the changes made from real names to professional names by film stars are quite interesting. For example, the real name of Kirk Douglas is Issur Danielovich, Mario Lanza was originally known as Alfred Arnold Cocoza. Ray Milland was Reginald Truscott-Jones. Wil liam Holden was William Beedie. As for John Wayne, his real name is Marion Morrison. Jane Wyman was Sarah Fulkcs, Terry Moore was Helen Koford and Susan Hayward was Edythe Mar rener. Children Need Responsibility Many youngsters think it is "the thing to do" to dislike work and to complain about any duties or responsibilities they are ex pected to carry out. As they grow older they feel sorry for themselves when they must work to earn a living or to run a home. Q. "I am a middle-aged man who grow up in the days when peoplo look it for granted that on works in life and does not expect to have erery thing handed to him on a silver platter. T h younger generation, as I see it in my teenage c h i 1- Dt. Herlock dren and in the young people who come to work at my office, feel that working is almost like slavery. They do as little as they can, always with one eye on the clock. What is responsible for this attitude, and how can it be changed?" (A) Early childhood training is, fundamentally, responsible for the anti-work attitude so pre valent today. Because homes run more or less on the push-button system, children are given few er duties and responsibilities than they were when you were a boy. Then, too, there is the preval ent belief that childhood should be a happy, carefree time, so the child can enjoy life before he must settle down to the burdens of adulthood. Many parents overdo this and make the child Experienced Pear Packers Wanted for This Season APPLY IN PERSON Southern Oregon Sales Inc. Corner Stewart Ave. and So. 99 Medford feel abused if he is asked to do anything but play. Correcting an attitude is cer tainly not easy when it has per sisted from early childhood. It is hard to convince a person who has been used to having no real responsibilities that it can be fun to work and that the pleas ures of successful achievement are greater than the pleasures of frittering away one's time in play. The sooner a child is given duties and responsibilities, the easier it is for him to get the idea that life is not one con tinuous round of play. Even more important, he must learn to get satisfaction from his achieve ments. This he will get only when he is praised or in some way rewarded for them. This is where far too many parents fall short. As a result they help create the "anti-work" attitude. (Copyright 1955. General Features Corp.) Moral Conduct of Wacs To Be Queried Ft. Jackson, S.C. Among the Married In what country can be found the world's most broad minded husbands? I have always thought it was the United States. I am beginning to suspect it is Great Britain. In evidence, I offer the following happening. As a bonus for exceptional efficiency, a Lon don firm decided to make a gift of an all-expense week end trip to Paris for ten of its typists. Eight of these typists are mar ried. Their husbands were not included in the invitation. How ever, none protested as to his wife taking the trip. So the eight young matrons flew off to Paris. The trip included visits to the gayer night spots. For this, the young women were pro vided with handsome male 'es corts. How about it sir? If your wife went on a week end trip to Paris alone such as the aforementioned, would you worry? Where to Eat If you know where in Manhat tan to find a restaurant where the food is exceptional, the ser vice excellent and the price right, ask some native of New York who can be classed as a young oldtimer. Among the top favorite eating places of fellows who really know New York are Dinty Moore's, Luchow's, Cav anaugh's, Rosoff's and Lindy's. For seafood they go to Sweet's, far downtown, and occasionally cross the bridge to Gage & Toll ner's in Brooklyn. By ROBERT MUSEL United Press Correspondent London U.R) The day Prin cess Margaret is free to an nounce her marital'intentions, if any is Aug. 21, her 25th birth day. The West End of London is beginning to boil with gossip as "M-day" approaches. Life will become a good deal duller when and if the little prin cess does choose a mate. The rumor factories will practically go out of business and her friends and alleged friends will have to find another subject of conversation. On a swing around the plush night club belt these are the stories I heard: Polo Player Rumored A titled young man who used to escort Princess Margaret be fore his marriage (to someone else) is passing the word that millionaire Billy Wallace, polo playing stepson of American writer Herbert Agar, is the lucky man. I had duly noted this tip when a friend well-versed in the , thought processes of the nobility pointed out that this titled young man had never discussed the princess' affairs before and might have a motive in naming Wallace. The motive: To hide the real choice. The Margaret Set, as the younger social crowd used to be called, is divided on whether Billy is the boy. Some think he may be. At least, he sees the princess more than any other eligible male does.
