Regarded Bank Officer Held For Embezzlement . Twenty Nine Palms, Calif. U.R) The president of a bank which was forced to close be cause of a missing S673.000 said today it broke his heart to hear his highly-regarded vice-president had been arrested for em bezzlement. J. P. Wasserburger, president of the Joshua Monument Na tional bank of Twenty Nine Palms, sobbed when he heard banker-race horse owner Roscoe D. Coon, 50, had been picked up by federal authorities at a race track. Can't Believe It j "This is a terrible blow to us," Vasserburger said. "It just broke my heart. I just can't believe that Coon would do anything wrong. We have had no reason at all to doubt his honesty." Coon, vice-president and cash ier of the desert community's only bank, was arrested at Del Mar racetrack Monday while awaiting the Wednesday open ing of the summer meeting to race his stable of thoroughbreds. Del Mar is about 100 miles southwest of here. Coon, who is a former vice- president of the Pasadena (Calif.) Junior Chamber of Commerce, was placed in the county jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. His ar raignment was continued until today. "I am amazed," declared Coon indignantly. "I don't have any idea of what this is all about." Slill Checking Books The bank was forced to close its doors Monday and the Fed eral Deposit Insurance Corp. was appointed its receiver. Treasury Department bank examiners still are checking the closed bank's books. William B. Hatch Jr., a sur veyor who is a member of the bank's board of directors, said "only a few at worst" of the bank's depositors would be hurt by the closing. FBI agents said Coon was charged with embezzling bank funds by ordering funds from the Los Angeles branch of the Federal Reserve bank and in tercepting the money at the Twenty Nine Palms post office before it could reach the bank. ' i 2 'NO SECRET AGREEMENTS' Senator Earle C. Clements, Ky., acting Senate majority leader confers briefly with Speaker of House Sam Rayburn following congressional briefing at White House on the Geneva Conference. Lead ers were assured that "no secret agreement of any kind" were reached at the Geneva meeting. Man Believes Faith Will Heal Compound Fracture Despite Gangrene Threat Hobart, Okla. 'U.R) A 28-year-old laborer, facing the risk of getting gangrene in a broken leg, said yesterday he believes faith will heal his wounds with out the aid of a doctor. Relatives took William Carl Holman home Monday from a hospital room where he was being treated for a compound fracture of his leg. Holman was hit by an automobile Sunday night while he was on a farm tractor. Dr. Richard Shriner said Hol man's leg and his life are both "in danger" and warned him that "if gangrene sets in, that will be the end." Believe in Miracles But Holman, who with his relatives belongs to the Church of the First Born, told a re porter, "I'll be back to work in a few days." "He'll be cured by faith. We believe in miracles," added his mother, Mrs. Lucias Holman, who refused to let the reporter take his picture. The leg was placed in a cast before Holman's family took him from Hobart General hospital Monday, but no surgery had been performed where the brok en bone extended through the skin. May Heal Anyway "There is a slim chance the leg will heal, anyway, but it is slim," Dr. Shriner said. Holman was taken to the fam ily's small, neatly kept home at nearby Rocky, Okla. A small electric fan stood by his bed in the near 100-degree heat, and his sister frequently gave him ice water to drink. sot Now I Save Now mwmm Jail Sentences Given In Case of Larceny Two Grants Pass men have pleaded guilty in district court to charges of petty larceny and have been sentenced to 90 days in Jackson county jail by Judge Rawles Moore. The one-time winsome child star, now 18, finally cut off that girlish shoulder-length hair into a 1955 Italian haircut for a ro mantic role in an RKO picture about a race horse, "Glory," her first move in four years. The final scene: Margaret get ting bussed by handsome John Lupton. Likes Initial Kill The historic moment was film ed by director David Butler, who instructed Margaret as how to hold her head. Lupton said he gave her "a real kiss." Margaret giggled it was "wonderful." "Oh, yes, I go out on dates now, to dinner, or dancing, but I haven't been kissed in real life," she confided after the good night, but I mean not a real, romantic kill." Margaret still has that sweet, breathless voice that fans re member from her baby films at MGM. But the short hair-cut makes her look her age and she's acquired a more collegiate man ner. "It took Margaret such a long time to grow up," said her moth er, who still is in evidence on the young actress' movie sets. "I think she was afraid she would miss the attention she got as a child star. She hates to give all that up. Grows Up Overnight . "But apparently overnight she decided to grow up. It happened very suddenly, within the last few months. She drives her own car now and goes out on dates and has press interviews alone. "It's Margaret's idea I come to work with her," the mother in sisted. "Sometimes I'll beg off and not go in the morning but at noon she telephones me to come over. I think it gives her self-confidence." For "Glory" Margaret will wear off-the-shoulder full-skirted evening gowns. She'll also blossom out in a black turtle neck sweater. 'Tve done stage roles and a lot of television, such as 'Climax' during the four years I was off the screen," she said. "I think people don't think of me as being little any more. This should open up a new career for me." Dead line for Sunday Classified is at noon Saturday. ARMY ENGINEER PROMOTED Portland (U.R) Col. L'ouis H.
