By LEO H. PETERSEN

Northville, Mich. U.R) Cary
Midlecoff. the golfing dentist
who is at the top of his game,
set out today after the only ma
jor golf championship he never
has won the PGA tournament
Declarine that "I'm playing
the best I ever have," Middle
coff. fresh from victory in the
Miller Open at Milwaukee, was
fawnrpd alone with two other
in this trvine test of
golf. Co-favored with him were
Sam Snead, three time winner
of the title and twice runner up
and defending champion Chick
Harbert, the pro at the Meadow
brook Country club, aite of the
tnurnev.
But while Middlecoff wai fat-
Isfied with his game, Snead said
that he wasn't "doing anything
"It's not only my putting, it's
mv whole game that is oil,
Snead said, "and I don't have
too much hope." r
Par 71 Course
However, those who know
Snead well say he often does his
best when he is dissatisfied with
Ms same.
Harbert, who figures the na
tion's best pros will have little
difficulty over the 6,701 -yard
nar 33-36 71 course, said MS
game was "only average." Al
though he doesn't have to quali
fy, he will tee off with 133 oth
ers in today's first of two 18-
hole aualifying rounds.
Most of the pros are familiar
with Meadowbrook and the
course has been especially easy
for Middlecoff. who won two
Motor City opens over it.
The practice round scores In
dicated that par is going to take
auite beating.
Jay Hebert of Woodmere,
N.Y., shot a four-under-par in a
practice round Tuesday after
67 on Monday. Mike Turnesa
came In with a 67. Middlecoff,
conserving his energy for the
tournament proper, went only
nine holes and did not keep
core.
Rocky Castellan.
Has New Look in
Fight Training
San Francisco U.R) Has
Baby - faced Rocky Castellani
turned killer?
The Cleveland middleweight
contender looked all the part
Tuesday as he teed off against
two sparring partners in the fin
al stages of training for Friday's
nationally televised bout at the
Cow Palace against Ray Robin
son. Castellanl's "new look," com
plete with bulging eyes and mas
sive left hooks, is a far cry from
the bicycling boxer of last Aug
ust who carried these gymnasium
tactics into the ring against Bobo
Olson and easily was defeated in
his bid for the middleweight
title.
Changed Style
Tve changed my Style," Cas
tellani explained after his work
out. "There was no color in it
and I decided I never would get
anywhere on a bicycle. In fact,
I changed it before the 13th
round of the Olson fight."
- Rocky ,said that his corner
told him he had to mix it more
If he expected to salvage' his
abortive bid for the crown. And
he has decided to switch for
good.
Castellani points with pride to
his eighth round knockout of
Moses Ward and subsequent vic
tories over Chico Varona and
Holly Mims as products of his
new approach to the business.
Yet he said he reserves the
right to start back pedaling again
If he thinks he can actually win
a fight that way. And that oes
for the 34-year-old Robinson.
Bruce Cudd Two Strokes Pace in WA
Rockford, 111. (U.PJ A 36-
year-old golfing veteran who is

Alex Walsh, an attorney play
ing on his home Rockford Coun

after 36 holes with a four-under-
par 71-67138.
The bulky 164-man field was
trimmed to the low 90 scorers
for today's third 18-hole medal
round. Another 18 holes Thurs
day will determine the low eight
who will begin match play Fri
day.
Welsh, despite his home
course advantage, could boast i who carded a three under 68 in
of no more than a one-stroke 1 his second 18.
lead over a duo of hot linksmen.
Knotted at 139's were Harold
Brink of Grand Rapids, Mich.,
who shot a 70 Tuesday, and Don
Bisplinghoff of Orlando, Fla.,

Scrap To Draw
Seattle (U.pj Plans for a
late August outdoor bout here
featuring former heavyweight
king Ezzard Charles were some
what up in the air today as the
result of a blistering 10-round
draw fought by big Bob Albright
and Toxie Hall.
Albright, 216, Los Angeles,
and Hall, 196, Chicago, tangled
in a featured heavyweight bout
at Civic Auditorium here last
night and came out even.
Steaming Left
Hall, a more experienced ring-
man, used a steaming left hook
to great advantage in the early
going and had the heavier Al
bright virtually out on his feet
, at the end of the sixth.
But Albright weathered the
storm and came on to take
charge in the final rounds to
earn the draw. The winner was
to have met Charles in a bout at
Sicks' Stadium late in August
providing Charles gets by Huri
cane Jackson Aug. 3 at Syracuse.
