Med Sreasf e if Addition of Ivory Grip Trebles Revolver Value Jack looked thoughtfully at the array of -revolvers in the showcase. Finally he pointed to one and asked to see it. "It's a Remington," the pro- prietor said. Jack hefted the weapon, spun the cylinder and examined the barrel. It was a lot of gun, all right an 1875 model, .44 cali- ber, six-shot, center fire, nearly 14 inches in over-all length and with a barrel a good eight inches long. "It's yours for $50," the pro- prietor said. Jack bought it. I didnt' see the gun again un- til some three months later when a group of us went target shoot- ing. Except for the grips, it was the same weapon, but Jack had altered them by putting in a pair made of ivory, carved in POSTAGE STAMP INVESTMENT PAYS 800 PER CENT PROFIT Jim Smith is a canny Scot from Nova Scotia who is always on the lookout for ways to scoop up an honest and easy dollar, - And so when I saw him the other day in the post-office lob- by, waiting patiently in a long line that stretched back from the philatelic window, I Immediate- ly wanted to know why. "It's the usual reason," he said. "Four times a year I come in here with the surplus that s too small for the regular invest ment, channels and buy a few sheets of the latest issues. "But it .takes so long for these new issues to get anywhere in value," I said,-untactfully point- out that he was well up in "his 50's now. The observation didn't faze him in the least. "I'm from long-lived stock, he said, "with memories like an elephant. Remember back in April of 1935, how you and I met right here in this same lob- again." by one morning?" ' ,- TOKEN STRESSES JACKSON'S HATRED FOR THE BANK The large copper cents had the peculiar greasy feeling that cop- per coins get when they lie for a long time in an old box. None- theless, they were in excellent condition so much so that I was tempted to pay the asking price of a dollar each. " But not tempted quite enough not until I saw that one of the pieces was not cent at all but a token. And even then, the thing that made me buy it was the thought that here would be Not wishing . to appear igno an ideal gift for a banker friend rant, I said something about of mine who feels very deeply that the Roosevelt-Truman pe- riod was simply the inevitably deplorable outcome of the elec- tion of Andrew Jackson. On one side, the token had an excellent head of old Andrew, the pugnacious patron saint of . all Democrats. On the other, it bore the legend "The Bank Must Perish," surrounding a wreath that enclosed another message to the effect that the Union must be preserved. And so, happy in the thought of how my Republican friend would choke at getting this me- memo - of the President who started "government interfer- ence with banking" way back in 1832 by an act that put the 23 MACHINHtY and TtACTOtS 3 Combines in excellent condition. 1 Oliver Grainmaster. sack attachment and electric reel control S695. 1 IHC No52R with sack attachment and Continental engine S49S. The change, of course, had nothing to do with the perform' ' ance of the weapon. But after Jack had fired an impressive score and some of the others had tried it, one of the group offered to buy it. He began at $100 and finally persuaded Jack to sell with an offer of $150. On the way home I -asked Jack why he sold. I knew him well enough to know that he didn' need the money. "It just isn't a very good gun, he said. "I prefer either a Colt or a Smith and Wesson. And since it cost me only an extra $20 for the grips, I figured might just as well take a profit on it as not. I shook my head. "Well, this may help you to remember," he said, pulling a check out of his pocket and wav- ing it under my nose. "You were telling me then that I was fool- ish to spend $30 for a sheet of 200 of the 16-cent, blue, air-mail special delivery stamps that Postmaster General Farley bad ''ordered printed. You said he was just trying to swing the phila- telic vote to F.D.R. and that there were ' too many of them printed for them to ever be worth anything." As I gradually recalled the scene under his prompting, Jim held the check still long enough for me to see the amount. It was for $270. "The catalogue price is $330,' Jim remarked, "but an increase in value of better than 800 per cent is plenty good enough for me. So I'm just going to try it Bank of the United States out of business, I paid out the $19 for the token and 18 copper cents. Some 48 hours later I pre- sented it to him. Only last month I had an opportunity to get one of these but the price was too high." nothing being too good for such an excellent banker and got out of there to look up the value. The bad news was that in good condition, like my find, the value was $50. More if the token were of silver or white metal.. I tried to write off my loss with the thought that the -gift would make things easier for me in loans, but I might better have thought of something else. When I went to see him the other day on business, there was no change. "The usual collat- eral," he said, reaching for his pound of flesh, like any other good banker. U.R) Modern living has changed rural Ameri ca from a closely knit society to a series of specialized "inter est" groups. That's the conclusion A. F. Wiledeh, University of Wiscon sin rural sociologist, has drawn from a study of current farm life. The old-time country neigh borhood is not as strong as it used to be, Wileden said. In some places it has disappeared completely. In its place is a new kind of group made up of people who are interested in the same or similar things. Wileden- calls these "special interest" groups, and he feels there are some things about them that need watching. One danger is that many pec? pie do not become active in such groups. Wileden said that in some areas as many as one-third of the people 10 years of age and over don't belong to any group at all. This leads to much of the anti-social behavior in our so ciety, he concluded. , Interest groups also tend to establish and strengthen class emphasis, according to Wileden. It was found in New York state that the major farm organiza tions attract owner families and those with higher educations and incomes. He said there weren't enough farm groups where ten ant families or those with lower incomes could feel at home. Some people fear that the spe cial interest groups among farm ers might become Treasure groups" that could damage the nation's, welfare, Wileden added. Weed Man Jailed On Embezzlement Weed, Calif.
