Mrs. John J. Madigan, a 48 year old grandmother who liked the Canadian "bush" country be cause it was "so peaceful and quiet," learned last week she is partner in a uranium discovery rated 'one of the richest in North America." "It was all just by accident," the bewildered Mrs. Madison aid. "But don't think it isn't a lot of fun." She and her husband, a truck ing firm executive, started spend ing summer vacations at Sharbot Lake, Ont., 20 years ago. There they met and became friends with two local residents, Dr. C. J. Wbytock and Harvey Adams. "Last summer they told us they had been looking for ura nium," Mrs. Madigan said, "but neither my husband nor I thought much about it." (U.R) A University of Illinois professor says destruction of Chicago would be much more harmful to the nation than the loss of New York, Washington or Los Anseles. Prof. John H. Garland predicts In a new book "The North Am erican Midwest," to be publish ed early next fall (by John Wiley and Sons) that Chicago may be come the largest city in the Un ited States. ' Garland declared that the Mid west may be an area on which - the free world's fate one day will depend because of its location, natural resources and culture. He called Chicago the hub of an area that has become the world's crossroads, and likened its position to that of Great Brit a in when she was queen of the seas. ' Development of the St. Lawrence Seaway will enhance the situation, Garland said. Garland expects New York City and Los Angeles will con tinue to grow, but not at the rate Chicago will expand. Over-Eager Forces Mav Brina Disease Los Angeles (U.R) A sug gestion that over-eager defense forces in the body may actually help bring on such disease as rheumatic fever, arthritis and defective kidneys has been made by Dr. Harrison Latt. The assoc iate professor of pathology at I University of California s medi ""cal center here, who is making a study of antibodies for the U.S. Public Health Service, said that sometimes the defense forces pursue disease-carrying elements so vigorously that they may dam age healthy cells. The doctor explained that the , damage may be in the form of changing the permeability of cell walls, thus upsetting the cell's osmotic pressure. This apparent ly causes a sudden change in cellular components and in cell function, he said. "Such a reaction would result In damaged tissue and may ex plain many maladies," Latt add ed. "The counter clicked away like mad when we went over the area," she said. "The doctor took some specimens into Ottawa and Toronto while the rest of us staked out the claims." The five of them hired a sur veyor to cover some 800 acres. They filed about 40 claims, in their own names and those of relatives. The report from assavers showed 15 per cent uranium con tent. Then came a message last week from the Atomic Energy Commission that the field could be one of the richest on the con tinent. The ore might be worth $1,500 a ton. (U.R) A team of geologists has work ed on top of blistering mountains and on the sweltering floor of this desolate Southern Californ ia desert to gather new informa tion in case American troops ever have to fight in another desert war. Headed by Dr. John F. Gaines and Dr. Richard F. Logan of the University of California in Los Angeles, the scientists ex perimented with living condi tions in the Primitive Provi dence Mountains for the Army's quartermaster corps. The team set up 14 weather stations at various elevations and made field trips to learn every thing possible about the climate, vegetation, and topography of a typical mountain range. They reported the psychologi cal and physical strain of with standing winds up .to 60 miles an hour wore nerves raw and stretched tempers thin. Some surprises received by the researchers included the discov ery that desert mountain sum mits are warmer on winter nights than the desert floor. Fabian, retired MSC scientist, traced the development of the pickle's popularity at the meeting.
