Increase in Assets
Reported by Local
Savings-Loan Assn.
' An increase in assets of more
than $1,200,000 since June 30,
1954, has been reported by the
Jackson County Federal Savings
and Loan association.
W. J. Warner, president, said
the increase resulted from an in
crease of more than $900,000 in
total savings in the association
during the past year.
-Since July 1, 1954, the as
sociation made some 580 loans,
totaling S2,378,622.94, according
to John Pletsch, secretary. This
is an increase of some $845,000
in mortgage loans for the year,
Earnings on mortgage loans
made it possible for the associa
tion to continue the 3 per cent
dividend to investors, and divi
dends paid on June 30 totaled
$116,997.65.
Both officers attributed the in
crease to the rapid growth of
southern Oregon, and Jackson
"county in particular, in popula
tion and new industries. To as
sist in this growth, Pletsch said,
the association will continue to
help contractors begin homes in
the fall so that men may work
under cover during the winter
months. This program, very suc
cessful last year, helped make
the construction of homes a year
around business in Jackson
county, he said.

Denies Law Violation
Fort Worth, Tex. (U.R) The
president of Safeway Stores,
Inc., a retail grocery chain, de
nied today that Safeway violated
anti-trust laws. ,
A federal Grand Jury indict
ment, returned here late yester
day, named the store chain and
two of its officials. The Grand
Jury charged that Safeway has
created a "super chain" and said
it "lowered prices in Texas to
destroy competition."
But Lingan A. Warren of Oak
land, Calif., Safeway president,
issued an immediate denial in
which he said the chain "has in
no way violated any anti-trust
laws unless meeting competition
in good faith has become a
crime."

The vast mass of muggy air

perature drops, but forecasters
said a massive high pressure cen

of the East sweltering through
the week end.
