Madronos in Texas Said Disappearing " Austin, Tex. (U.PJ One of Texas' least known but ornamen tal trees, the madrone, is disap pearing. The madrone, sometimes call ed the "squaw leg" because of its smooth reddish trunk, can still be found in the hill country of central Texas, but only where the terrain is rugged and inac cessible. Texas legend has it that the tree does not like civiliza tion. Nor can the copper-colored tree very similar to the popular mimosa, be transplanted. Prac tically every known method of propagating from seed or trans planting the young growth from a foot or up has failed. The madrona, with its delicate pink flowers in the spring and brilliant red berries at Autumn, is usually found in the poorest of soils and invariably on sloping ground. The flowers, berries and leaves make good decorations since they will last for many weeks in fresh water without any discoloration. This apparent hardiness is just as deceptive to the would-be transplanter, since the tree dies very slowly and. gives the im pression it will live after remov al. But the madrona never puts on a new leaf stock after trans planting. Mexican folklore says the "madrona" (mother) tree will always die if moved. Dead line Sunday Classified ia at noon .
