July 5, 1955 ASNE Spokesman Criticizes Holding Back Information Washington (U.R) A spokes man for the American Society of Newspaper Editors has criti cized the Eisenhower adminis tration for holding back infor mation on the Salk polio vac cine and the danger of "fallout" from H-bomb explosions. The criticism was made by J. Russell Wiggins, executive edi tor of the Washington Post and Times Herald, and chairman of the ASNE's Freedom of Infor mation Committee, in a nation wide interview. Should Tall All Wiggins said any administra tion should give "all relevant material bearing upon great na tional issues" to the public. He said public confidence in the Salk polio vaccine program was shaken because the govern ment failed to tell the public some of the disadvantages and defects early enough. Protest Led by Wilson ". . . . It was only after a very energetic protest, led by Lyle Wilson of the United Press, that 'Giant Alcatraz' Planned by Bureau Washington (U.R) The Federal Bureau of Prisons is seeking a $10,000,000 appropria tion for construction of a "giant Alcatraz" to house .dangerous and troublesome convicts now committed to overcrowd prisons, it was learned today. As envisioned by Bureau of Prison Director James V. Ben nett, the proposed prison would be built in the next three years somewhere in Illinois probab ly in the Springfield area. Bur eau spokesmen said it would re ceive the Alcatraz-type crimin al the habitual offender, the bank robber, the racketeer, and the "explosive, unpredictable" personality. - It would have a 600-man ca pacity whereas "The Rock" in San Francisco Bay seldom houses more than 300 convicts. some of the subsequent meetings were opened up," he said. This referred to dispatches on the closed-door meetings written by Lyle C. Wilson, vice-president and Washington manager for the United Press Associations.
