Gas Stations Can Disrupt Traffic Chicago (U.R) Gas stations can become a problem, according to the American Society of Plan ning Officials. They can create traffic con gestion along major streets and highways. Unregulated stations can become a fire and explosion hazard. Too -many stations can lower the property values of neighbor ing residential areas, and aban doned stations can create blight As a result, the society said, many cities have tried to re strict the number of stations within their borders. But, the society said, courts generally have viewed such at tempts with disfavor, contending that they tend to constitute a monopoly for already existing stations. Multnomah County Quits O&C Group Portland (U.R) Multnomah county withdrew today from the Association of Oregon & Cali fornia Land Grant Counties. The three county commissioners, all Democrats, said the action was taken to protest hiring former Oregon Senator Guy Cordon as association counsel. . Commissioners said their ac tion was "not political." They added that they believed Cor don, Republican defeated last year by Sen. Richard L. Neu berger, had not done too much for Multnomah county in land grant cases. ' Cordon was employed last week as special counsel on a one- year contract paying $12,000. He will work on the interchange of timber holdings between the for est service and -the O&C lands. Of the 18 O&C counties in Western Oregon, Multnomah county has the smallest holdings. It realizes about $40,000 a year from timber sales. Morning Star Leads Honolulu Yacht Race San Pedro, Calif. (U.R) The sleek Morning Star, holder of the elapsed time record for the Transpacific Yacht race to Honolulu, held a narrow lead in the -1955 running . of ; the 2250-mile race and yatchsmen speculate a new record may be in the offing. Richard Rheem's 96 foot schooner was 186 miles out un der an overcast sky and running before a 20-mile an hour wind as the first 24 hours of the race neared an end. But pressing her three miles behind was William A. Pomer oys lOS-foot, 10-inch schooner Ramona, the largest boat in the race. Marion S. Centers Dies at Ashland Ashland Funeral services for Marion S. Centers, 71, who died here Monday, will be held at Lady of the Mountain Catho lic church Thursday at 9:30 a.m. with the Rev. Father McCloud of Medford officiating. Interment will be in Mountain View ceme tery. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held at Litwil ler's Mountain View chapel Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. The deceased was born at Sams Valley on Jan. 27, 1884, and had spent most of his life in the Rogue valley. His parents came from Missouri in 1842. He was a graduate of the San Fran cisco School of Veterinary Surgery.
