Mars sets only half an hour after sunset, so is hopeless ly lost to view. Jupiter is above the horizon 30 minutes longer and likely can be glimpsed near the horizon in the west-north west. . ' - Venus and. Mercury are close together in the dawn sky, rising in the east-northeast an hour before the sun. Careful scanning should show Venus and possibly Mercury. ' The only planet now easily located is Saturn. An hour after sunset it is at only a moderate height above the southern hori zon. Saturn can be distinguished from a real star in that It does not twinkle while stars do. For tmr study- of the brighter stars let us observe about 1 la bours after sunset Spica is now twinkling in the southwest. This star is at about the same height above the horizon as Saturn and is somewhat west of the planet. Note the rather awkward letter Y formed of dim stars out to the right of Spica and somewhat higher. Spica is at the base of the letter, Low in the west Regulus is at the end of the handle of the celectial Sickle. The blade, of dim stars is to the right of Re gulus and is open downwards. If you are north of 44 degrees latitude, yellow Capella is visi ble almost on the horizon a little west of due north.
