t EIOKT MTOTORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday. June 30, 19S3 ian, Fed Up Willi Taxes, Opens Republic of Own Rome (U.R) A sheepherder in southern Italy decided he was led up with government taxes and set up an "autonomous re public" of his own. Michele Mulieri has six acres of land at Tricarice in the stone heavy, poverty-ridden ankle of Italy's boot. "I don't know about other folks but I know when I've had enough," said the 59-year-old Mulieri as he chalked up notice or his sovereign state on the walls of Tricarico's little town square. His domain is open to any weary soul desiring to escape from Italy's tax burden. The only inhabitants to date are Mulieri and his wife, their five children and a score of sheep. Mulieri said that If Italy want ed any further dealings with him it should send an ambassa dor. Instead, three policemen showed up at the Mulieri farm house and delivered an official ultimatum that he stay on his own property or produce a "valid passport" in the form of a tax receipt. Mulieri is only one of many complaining about taxes. Rome's big, pro-government II Messeg- gero ran a long article claiming that the cinema, stage and other forms of entertainment cost too much because of taxes. It point ed out that films are an essential ingredient of the national diet and, like bread, should not be taxed out of reach of the aver age citizen. "Amusements, diversions, re creations and shows are today considered necessary elements among the basic needs of work , ers," the newspaper commented. The government mark-up on movie tickets goes as high as " Avoid crowded picnic areas by picnicking at breakfast time. Early risers know that picnics are more enjoyable if the surroundings are uncluttered with people or things. Breakfast is an easy meal to take on a picnic. Ready-to-eat cereals are just right no cooking is necessary merely pack the cereal box in the picnic hamper. This breakfast takes just a few minutes to pack. MENU Shredded Wheat with Fresh Sliced Peaches and Milk Pecan Rolls Butter Chocolate Milk The peaches could be sliced and sugared at home. Additional sugar would not be necessary with the sweetened peaches. Pecan rolls are a favorite butter probably would be unnecessary. Colorful plastic spoons, paper plates (except the cereal bowls) and gay bandannas for napkins add a festive note to the outdoor breakfast. Another way to vary the way you serve that all important meal breakfast is to serve it on trays that can be carried to the porch or patio. Doctors and dietitians agree that a basic breakfast of fruit, cereal, milk, bread and butter will provide one-fourth of the daily nutritional requirement. You and your family will feel better and work better, especially in the late morning hours, if you eat a basic breakfast the vear round. 86.9 per cent, noted the paper. In Milan today it costs from 600 to 800 lire (96 cents to $1.28). to put oneself into a movie seat. Sometimes the price hits 1,000 lire ($1.60). The paper noted that part of the taxed funds are returned to producers of films. That is the well-known Italian "subsidy" of 15 to 18 per cent which is the basic ingredient in the produc tion of films in Italy, It has many critics in the industry and out of it. The Messeggero article took this stand: "We believe that this form of subsidy given to the entertain ment industry is actually the best way to achieve shows of little value. . ." Eitel Monaco, head of Italy's motion picture producer and dis tribution association (ANICA), recently told a gathering of Am erican businessmen that current taxes on films are "an absurd quota. c UovA Whcaf a value! STOR-DOR DISTRIBUTORS CQ&D(33BP Growth of Paris Claimed Too Fast; City Showing Age Paris (U.R) The experts shake their heads sadly and agree that the queen of cities, gay Paree, is showing her age. Paris has grown too fast, her circulation is sluggish and her face has been lined by time. The situation is critical and the cure extremely costly. The lowest estimate is that it would take $162,857,142 to make a good start at remedying the ills of the capital. That is the opinion of 200 architects, traffic experts and city planners who completed an extensive diagnosis of Paris. They found that the capital grew too quickly with too little planning, that it overbalances the rest of the nation as the econ omic' and cultural nerve center and that its rising traffic is slow ly smothering it. To start with, the experts found there is an imbalance be tween Paris and the rest of the nation. In its radius of little more than 20 kilometers is packed one-seventh of the total population of France. Smalt Area Into Paris, as into the hub of a wheel, runs every major road, railway and airline in France. Paris is the magnetic pole of the French economy, the seat of the stock exchange and the center of culture. More than 62,000 col lege students more than half of the college students in all France are enrolled in Paris universities. Furthermore all of this activ ity or certainly 80 to 90 per cent of it is concentrated in only 16,000 acres of Paris' total of 3,000,000. That area runs from the Arch of Triumph to the Louvre, left of the Seine to Mont Sainte-Genevieve and right of the river to the grand boule vards and up through Mont- marte. "The City of Light" is being slowly suffocated by its traffic problem and poor layout. The central market place (Les Halles), in the heart of the tour ist area, causes such traffic tie ups that, although the heavy trucks roll m from the country shortly after midnight, the jam often continues until 4 p.m. The police department figured out for the experts that there are 10 private cars for every one public bus, yet private cars carry only 30 per cent of the people who daily ride to work in Pans. In this central section, more than 80 per cent of the buildings are over 100 years old, the ex perts said, and many thousands were built durmg the aesthetic cally unsatisfactory period of the second empire. Paris is gradually being aban doned as a residential center, the experts said, because of the heavy traffic, the noise and the somewhat startling fact that one out of every three residential buildings in the area lacks basic conveniences such as gas, water, electricity and plumbing. The vast majority of Parisians live in the other sprawling areas of the city which, like Topsy, just grew without planning, adequate facilities, sufficient space or beauty. An adequate building pro gram would involve underpasses and parking spaces, widening of narrow streets, building of speed ways and new parks, schools and hospitals for outlying areas. After the preliminary "mod ernizing," huge sums would have to be voted every year to keep up with the speed of mod ern living, the experts con cluded. On The Side ey e. v. Queen Elisabeth wasn't quite sure what to do recently when three gallant students spread their cloaks in her path. She shot a worried look at Prof. Rutherford Dow. mas ter of Queen's College. He as sured her that. like the fabled Sir Walter Raleigh, the stu dents wanted her lo tread upon their cloaks. The Queen, who had just re turned from Norway with the Duke of Edinburgh, grace fully stepped on the garments and thanked the owners with a smile. 5 GIVING undivided attention to task at hand, Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov attacks laden plate at Chicago luncheon en route to N. Y. (International) REMEMBER THE HIT play titled "Journey's End?" The action took place in a trench at the battle front in World War I. So cleverly and powerfully was the play written that the au dience had the feeling they, too, were in that war torn trench with the fighting men. That is the supreme dramatic achieve ment; to make the audience so lose themselves in their absorp tion that they feel they are actually taking part- in the drama being unfolded. A cur rent play that produces this af fect is the thrilling, chilling melo-drama titled "Desperate Hours." Makes you feel you, too, are trapped in the house with that trio of trigger happy escaped criminals. The realism is increased by the remarkable per formances of the cast, especially by Karl Maiden, whose por trayal as the head of the harassed household is a classic. Can Happen Is your charming matrominial mate around 50 years of age? I suppose if such is the case you are confident you will never have to pace the hospital waiting room floor again waiting to learn what has happened in the ma ternity ward? Don't be too sure about that, Sir. Mrs. Vincent Rigina of Detroit, who is 52, recently gave birth to a son. A fine healthy infant, weight seven pounds, nine ounces. So, Sir, you too may again assume the role of the proud papa and pass out the cigars as in the days of yore. Please Note California is in again. A resi dent of the Golden State points with pride to the fact that George N. Stockton of Alham bra, Calif., who is 95, still has all his original teeth and most of his original hair. Another Golden Stater reports that Mrs. Margaret Mountford of San Francisco, who is 92, has all her original teeth and reads and sews without the need of spec tacles. Sidelights Calling all husband hunt ers! There are 40,000 surplus men of marriageable age in New Zealand . . . "Where can you get frogs' legs well prepared in New York City?" Asks a San Franciscan. There are several places in Manhattan featuring that specialty. Also snails. How ever, I cannot conscientiously recommend any particular place. Have had no personal exper ience. I don't care for frogs legs, snails or onion soup. Heart Throbs What's all this about tall, ter rific, dark handsome fellows being the top heart throbs? Everything seems to indicate height is no great advantage in inspiring the intense affection of a female. That great lover Byron was only 5 feet 7. To get closer to the present, a Florida Don Juan, who was reported to have forty women wild over him at the same time, was said to be 5 feet 6. However, the reports further said he had "a powerful, domineering voice." Defective Motor Fills Home With Smoke Central Point A defective re frigerator motor filled the resi dence of Lester L. Moser, 65 Winema Way, with smoke yes terday morning, but damage was limited to the refrigerator and slight smoke damage, it was re ported, by Central Point Rural Fire district crews. Frances Churchman, 105 Wi nema Way, reported the fire after she saw smoke coming from windows in the Moser residence. Rural Fire district crews were called to the Gulf Red Cedar mill a few minutes earlier to extinguish a fire in sawdust bark. The mill is located near Highway 99 north of Central Point.
