G&ig Four May Study fissue off Americans Md in SDave Camps Br CHARLES M. MeCANN United Press Correspondent It was inspiring to read, last week end, how Americans im prisoned in Russian slave labor camps are making little United States flags out of bits of colored paper and displaying them at the risk of torture. It was a reminder also, at an interesting time, of the shocking brutality of the Soviet slave la bor system. Untold thousands of men of many countries as well as un told millions of Russians are held in these camps. They have been sentenced to fantastic terms of imprisonment on various pretexts. Economy Depends on Slaves But the fact is that the Soviet Russian economy depends on slave labor. So inefficient is Communist government that the Soviet government can not dei pend on free labor if any la bor in the Soviet union can be called free. Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell raised the issue in a merciless attack on the Soviet labor system before the Interna tional Labor Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 6 He attacked the Communist 1a- bor unions as mere "transmis sion belts" for government re cruitment of labor, and also at tacked the labor camp system But the issues which interests the United States and other western countries is that of their own citizens who are enslaved by the Soviet government. Discussion Suggested It was suggested at the time that Mitchell made his speech that the United States might raise the issue of American prisoners at the Big Four Con ference which has now been set for July 18 in Geneva. The week-end dispatches from Vienna, giving new details of the imprisonment of Americans, would seem to make this almost certain. Austrians returning from inv nrisonment told not only of Americans but of Britons and Frenchmen and Germans and Japanese imprisoned by Russia. Even if President Eisenhower and Secretary of State John Foster Dulles did not raise the question the British and French delegations probably would. London (U.R) Dr. Leslie Hotson has come up with the in teresting, if unfashionable, the ory that the works of William Shakespeare were written by William Shakespeare. Right now this means he is bucking the trend. American critic Calvin Hoffman is in Britain to open an ancient tomb which, he says, will help prove his argument that Christopher Marlowe really wrote the plays and sonnets Shakespeare gets credit for. ' And the Bacon Society is fur ther creating a stir with- de mands that in any movie based on a Shakespeare play screen credit be given to Sir Francis Bacon, who is the society's can didate for Shakespeare's laurels. Hotson, on the other hand, has come up with a prodigious bit of research on the play "Twelfth Night" and he considers that no one but, Shakespeare himself could have written it Elizabeth On Hand What's more, Hotson is con vinced that Shakespeare turned out "Twelfth Night" quickly and under pressure. Peering over his shoulder, so to speak, was Queen Eliabeth I herself. Hotson went to Italian, Ger man, Russian and English ar chives in search of documents that would help him recreate the circumstances under which the famous comedy was written and performed. He tells the results in a new book he titled "The The play had its world pre miere before the queen, her courtiers and distinguished guests on the night of Jan. 6, 1601. Hotson found that certain characters and lines in the play had a special meaning in terms of the people in the audience. Seated near Elizabeth while "Twelfth , Night" unfolded was the handsome Virginio Orsino, Duke of Barcciono, who was vis iting London from Italy and had made a big hit with the queen. It was no conincidence that the leading character in the play was called the Duke Orsino." Fur Hatted Russian Another guest was a "tall, very fat" Russian, Grigori Mik hulin. He was an envoy of the Czar Boris Goudonov, and a fur hatted wonder around the court. Hotson has picked out several references to the czar's ambassa dor in "Twelfth Night." "Twelfth Night," as Hotson sees it, could not have been writ ten by some hidden genius and attributed to Shakespeare by ac cident. And who would the queen turn to for a workmanlike job of playwriting? To William Shake speare, of course, says Hotson. COON-NEUBERGER DEBATE Klamath Falls (U.R) Rep. Sam Coon and Sen. Richard L. Neuberger of Oregon have agreed on the date of October 6 for a "debate here on Coon's bill for partnership construction of the John Day dam.
