SIX MEDFORD (OREGON)" MAIL TRIBUNE Tuesday, June 28 I9S3 Sift 'kVh , o HANDCUFFED TO ANOTHER PRISONER, Minot F. Jelke (sec ond from left), enters New York's Sing Sing Prison to begin a two-to-three-year term as convicted procurer. (International) Joseph Santley Takes New Entertainment Media in But Forgets Acting BY JACK GAVER ' New York (U.R) When they invent another new entertain ment medium, you can -bet on one thing. Joseph Santley will find something to do in it. , This versatile showman has settled down in New York for the time being to deal with a little television problem that involves turning out 78 filmed programs starring Patti Page and her songs for Screen Gems, Inc. beginning July 5, these 15 minute shows will be visible on CBS at 7:45 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. "These musical vignettes may sound like a simple thing to do," observed Santley, producer-director of the series, "but in many ways these are more diffi cult than doing long shows. Hartford, Coan. establish the mood for three or four songs and give the feeling of production. You have to achieve maximum effect with a minimum of everything except, of course, in this case there is no minimum of talent. "The country knows Patti well as a singer, thanks to the tremendous sales of her record ings. But she is considerably more than a singer. I've done everything in show business for a long time, and I'll say that she'll have only those limits as an entertainer that she sets her self. She has a quick grasp of direction, an application for work that is astounding and she is an actress, no mere projector of songs." Santley recalled that, un knowingly, he got the training many years ago that makes it possible for him to be at home with the short musical format. "It was in vaudeville, natural ly" he said. "Between Broadway Musicals" Santley and his wife, Ivy Sawyer, used to be one of the great stage teams . "My wife and I would take vaudeville engagements and . we'd put on just about the sort of musical vignette that I'm doing now. I wrote, staged and acted in them. "But when I went into the movies, I was smart enough to forget about the acting and con centrate on writing, directing and producing. You last longer that way." After 16 years in Hollywood, turning out film after film, tele vision caught up with Santley, who didn't hesitate to tackle the new medium from 'the ground up. In the past five years he's turned out some of NBC's , big gest musical extravagances, in cluding the old "AH Star Revue," some of the "Colgate Comedy Hours" and the Mickey Rooney filmed series. "I'll stick with television until they find some other way to bring boy, girl and song together and then I'll try that," Santley said. "Universal-International wanted me to play a doc tor in 'Away All Boats, but I thought it would be too groaned today. "So they gave me the role of a 'stony-faced army officer' and there I am looking like the doctor in 'Medic' again." .. The story of Boone is a case history of how a role can in fluence the life of an actor. Many fans think Boone is a real doctor and are crushed to hear he isn't. Once a clinic thought so, too, and called to hire him. He receives fan mail from doctors. He has lectured on "Medics" to raise 8265,000 for Los Angeles new Mount Sinai hospital. Admires Doctors Most of his working days are spent in a white coat with a stethoscope dangling from his neck. When he attends boxing matches, the crowd yells for him to patch up the wounded fight ers. ' By now, confessed Boone, he even wishes he were a doctor. "I envy doctors," he admitted. "It's a tremendous profession, a way of life. "This acting business is a career of ego, in different cos tumes. It's selfish. "Doctors at the hospitals dress in small rooms with steel lock ers. They don't complain. But you take actors! If their dressing rooms aren't redecorated, man, you're gonna hear about" it, and how." Boone first did "Medic" as a radio show years ago and was paged for the TV version. He has starred in nine out of 29 "Medic" episodes and hosted the rest. Back, on Medic '' "I've been criticized for look ing serious on the show but I watched real doctors at work and they concentrate very hard," he said. Artturi Lehtinen, who is Fin land's permanent United Na tions observer, added that the jitters are understandable be cause "it is the first time in their Americans history that there has been threat of attack." He said Finland right now is more concerned with internal problems. Finland and Russia are enjoying good relationships, he added.
