Speeches Deflect Tone (QfF Cautious Gdope for Future By GEORGE COFFEY United Press Correspondent San Francisco (U.R) The United Nations began its sec ond decade today with diplo mats of its 60 member nations more than ever determined to keep the world at peace. This determination to work for peace and to work hard for it was the stated aim of speakers who addressed the 10th anniversary meeting the the UN here. - Every speaker and there were 73 of them agreed that the United Nations still repre sents the best and possibly the only hope for a permanent and lasting peace. The final sessions, of the UN's 10th birthday observance came to a close Sunday with a minute of silent prayer. Then the dele gates scattered to their homes Oregon Follows Trend In Wheat Election Portland U.R) Oregon farmers followed a nation-wide trend Saturday in approving wheat marketing quotas by a favorable margin of 74.2 per cent. With 29 of Oregon's 36 coun ties voting, farmers favored the quotas 2592 to 900. Umatilla, the state's largest wheat county, voted in favor of government controls 533 to 202. Willamette valley counties gave the quotas a favorable mar gin, but they failed to pass in Baker, Clackamas, Columbia, Douglas, Grant, Harney, Jack son, Klamath, Union, Wheeler and Benton counties. Approval by 66.7 per cent was required to carry. Red Hearing Slated In Los Angeles Area Los Angeles (U.R) A subcom mittee of the House Un-American Activities Committee today opened a five day public hearing to investigate suspected Com munist activity in Southern Cali fornia. Committee counsel Frank Tav- enner said the first of approxi mately 40 witnesses would be persons connected with the mo tion picture industry. He de clined to identify them in ad vance of their appearance. Rep. Clyde Doyle (D-Calif.), presides over the three man sub committee. Sitting with him are Rep. Donald Jackson (R-Calif.) and Rep. Morgan Moulder CD- Colo.). Four Given $400,000 For Nuclear Process Washington 0JR) The Atomic Energy Commission Sat urday awarded $400,000 to four nuclear scientists in return for all rights to plutonium separa tion processes they developed. Receiving the award were Drs. Glenn T. Seaborg and Emilio G. Segre, University of California and Joseph W. Ken nedy and Arthur C. Wahl, Wash ington University, St. Louis, Mo. AEC Chairman Lewis L. Strauss said the experts de veloped the processes prior to engaging in government atomic contracts. Patent applications had been filed secretly between 1945 and 1947. Young from Wichita Falls, Tex., visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Stancliffe last week. Mrs. Young, is a former valley resi dent. They also called at the Walter Germer home, the R. Dubs home, and at the E. A. Parker home. Mrs. Claude Smith is in the Community hospital in Medford. Hed condition is considered fair and she may have visitors now. A shower was given for Keith Thompson whose wedding to Miss Barbara Walker of Albany will be an event of July 10 at Albany. The shower was at the home of Mrs. Bertha Cobleigh Thursday. Prizes were given and Mrs. Elva Claflin, Mrs. Enid Cas ter, and Mrs. Myrtle Hixson as sisted with the serving. The Thursday club met at the home of Mrs. Marie Fisher Thursday for a covered dish luncheon. A very enjoyable time was had by all and it was de cided to have the July 21 meet ing at the Community club pic nic grounds. Chairman in charge is Mrs. Maggie Germer. Kay and Charles Fisher are back home after enjoying a va cation spent with relatives, Kay going to Los Angeles to visit her Grandmother Fisher and her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Evans, and Charles vis iting an uncle, MSgt. Robert Loomis, stationed at Fairchild Air Base in Washington. Mr. Harmon of the Phoenix Feed and Seed store is selling all the stock in his store and is quitting business. He has no plans for the future as yet. Indonesian Army Defies President Djkarta, Indonesia (U.R) The Indonesian Army today defied President Sukarno and the Cab inet and reSused to accept a new army commander appointed by the government. All top army officers boy cotted the installation ceremony of Maj. Gen. Bambang Utoyo as chief of staff, and a few hours later the acting army command er announced he would refuse to turn over his duties to Utoyo. Secretary of State John Foster Dulles, British For eign Secretary Harold MacMil lan and French Foreign Minister Antoine Pinay presented propos als to Russian Foreign Minist er Vyacheslav M. Molotov about procedures to be followed at Geneva. Molotov accepted the propos als almost exactly as the West presented them. Cautious Hope for Future Speeches the nations deliver ed reflected in general a tone of cautious hope for the future. MacMillan spoke of the "lift ing of the cloud" which had ob scured previous talks among cold war participants. (U.R) A British Columbia logger took the national birling champion ship out of the United States yes terday for the first time in the history of the national roleo event. Ardiel Wickheim, Sooke, B.C., flipped Russ Ellison. Aberdeen, Wash., from the floating log for two straight falls to win the men's title. Virginia Hansen, 22, Toutle, Wash., dumped 17-year-old Elizabeth Wamboldt, Greenfield, Nova Scotia, in two-out-of-three tries to win the 1955 wom en's birling title. Miss Hansen was the 1953 champion and her sister, Charlotte, won the 1954 title. Consolation Round In the men's consolation birl ing, Mark Olsen, Escanaba, Mich., defeated Jabiel Wickheim of Sooke. Sam Harris, Kelso, Wash., rolled Elmer Swanson, San Fernando, Calif., off the log in the oldtimers' division. A team of Jim Running, Long view, Wash., formerly of Eau Claire, Wis., and Arbutus am oureux, Ladysmith, Wis., won the trick and fancy birling cham pionship. Supreme Court Justice William O. Doug las said today the West should recognize Communist China and that Nationalist China's seat on the United Nations Security Council be given to some other Asian nation. Douglas arrived in Tokyo Sun day en route to Calcutta, India, where he will deliver 12 lec tures from July 4 to 20 at Calcutta. Police Hold Portland Man Following Shooting Portland U.R) Paul K. Lowe, 30-year-old laborer, was held today in connection with the wounding of his ex-wife and a friend of hers with a shotgun Saturday. Lowe was arrested without re sistance in downtown Portland with the shotgun tucked down, his trouser leg. Several officers had gone to his ex-wife's home after receiving a report of the shooting but Lowe had gone. In a statement signed before Detectives Tom Tennant and John Hunt yesterday, Lowe ad mitted the shotgun went off while he and his ex-wife. Flora McDowell, were struggling. She was wounded in the thigh and Perren Terhune, 41, was spat tered with pellets. Both were treated at a local hospital. CORN HARVEST The U.S. corn crop tops three billion bushels a year. Search of Reservoir For Bodies Postponed Salem U.PJ Search for the bodies of two Detroit, Ore., boys who drowned in Detroit reser voir following an auto crash a week ago Saturday, will prob ably be postponed until next fall, state police said today. The boys, John Wallace, 17, and Richard Jennings, 14, were Tokyo (U.R) Police today an nounced the arrests of five Ko reans and a Japanese suspected of operating a Communist North Korean spy ring in Japan. presumed drowned when a car driven by 41-year-old James A.
