Astronomer, Extension Division Oregon Higher Education System From Central Point, Ore., Dr. C, L. Perkins writes regarding a gorgeous phenomenon he re cently observed and asks for an explanation in this column. A shower had passed to the east of the observer and the setting sun, shining through an opening near the western horizon, was paint ing on the dark, stormy clouds m the east two splendid rain bows and some narrower bands of color under the curve of the inner bow. The center of most rainbows, the point to which one end of an imaginary string might be fas tened while the other swings out the arcs as with colored crayons, is directly opposite the sun from the observer. The observer's back must be turned toward the sun. The outside of the primary bow (the brighter one) is every where 42 degrees from the sun opposite center; the outside of the secondary, 54 degrees. The primary bow has the vio let on the inside and on through the blue, green, yellow and orange to red on the outside. The secondary bow appears at some distance outside the arc of the primary, is dimmer and has the colors reversed with the violet on the outside.. Inside the pri mary and rather crowded, there sometimes appear narrow bands of color, principally red and green. These are known as supernumerary bows and are due to interference effects. There are also three other bows usually listed in meteoro logic discussioifs. These are in the direction of the sun and are not often noticed. They are known as tertiary, quaternary and quinary bows. All five of these are caused by reflections and refractions of sunlight in the individual raindrops. The pri mary results from one reflection inside the drops. The others are due to two, three, four and five internal reflections. When sunlight is passed through a glass prism, it is brok en up into the various rainbow colors due to refraction and dis persion. The falling raindrops opposite in direction from the sun act in the same way, then reflect back to us. Any high school physics text explains this. A few years ago my wife and I were observing a splendid rainbow after a late afternoon summer shower. So near were the retreating raindrops that the lower end of one arm of the arc - was clearly outlined be tween us and the hill, scarcely one-quarter mile away. We de cided to telephone the professor across the street since he de lighted in brilliantly-colored rainbows. Evidently he could not see the bow we saw for it would have been behind a tall fir tree from his position. But he could see one in exactly the same direction from himself as ours was from us. The eastern sky right then was packed with rainbows, but each individual would see only one of them. 4-H.
