(U.R) Wes Santee, the Ashland antelope, and Fred Dwyer renewed their duel of endurance today, but neither hoped to approach the four-minute mile. The mile was rated the best opening day event in the Na tional AAU track and field meet at the University of Colorado. The 5,350-foot altitude of Fol som field was figured to prevent any records in distances from the mile and beyond because the normal barometric pressure is 24.60, compared to 29.92 at sea level. That means nearly 20 per cent less oxygen in each breath a runner takes here. Santee, who held the AAU championship for two years be fore Dwyer won a year ago, holds the Folsom field record for the mile 4:13. He said that the four-minute mile was "out of the question up here," so he just planned to "run to win." He'll not only have to beat Dwyer, but Billy Tidwell, a fel low Kansan; UCLA's Bob Sea man, Bill Dellinger, 1954 NCAA champion from Oregon. Portland Helps Pads Strengthen PCL Lead By DON THACKERY United Press Sports Writer The Portland Beavers were San Diego's favorite ball club today after the Bevos knocked over the threatening Seattle Rai niers and gave the Padres some breathing space in the Pacific Coast league pennant race. San Diego took care of Sacra mento 11-3 with a home run barrage and the Beavers let them increase their lead to -a game and a half by rallying to down Seatle 3-2. Oakland outlasted Hollywood 6-5 and San Francisco beat Los Angeles 4-2 in battles affecting the mid-section of the standings. Bill Werle held the hard-hitting Rainiers to six hits last night, but it looked as if that would not be enough. The Suds had a 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth but the Bea vers ran through three Seattle pitchers and scored the needed two runs for victory. Dick Whitman's single brought home the winning run. Bill Kennedy, second Seattle pitcher, got the loss. Four Homers Meanwhile San Diego bombed Sacramento with four home runs, one a grand slammer to win with ease for John Car michael. The Pads scored five runs in the first inning to sew up the contest. Dick Sisler hit two of the home run blows including the bases-loaded smack. Ed Bailey and John Merson hit the other round trip blasts. Harry Bright homered for two of the Solon runs.
